Hi!

I’d like to proceed with the next book from Conrad’s bibliography:
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1476
https://archive.org/details/cu31924060276973
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chance_(Conrad_novel)
https://github.com/SzymonSzott/joseph-conrad_chance

The 1926 scans have an author's note, which PG omits; I'll add that.

Best,
Szymon

Lukas,
I have four cases where I'm not 100% sure to do:
 1. by means of a door marked Private
 2. he could read Charles Powell written very plain on the parchment
 3. door with the words Hotel Entrance on the glass panels
 4. The word THRIFT perched right up on the roof in giant gilt letters [previous sentences indicate this is part of the store's name]
In the last case, the step-by-step guide says to use lowercase and which is "for unsemantic small caps, like in storefront signs." I guess that holds also for 1 and 3 (even if the publisher was inconsistent). What about case 2? Should I change italics to quotes?

Thank you,
Szymon

I think you're correct that 1, 3, and 4 can use small caps. For 2, I think you can use quotes instead of italics (flag as an editorial commit).

Also note that in cases where you could see replacing italics with scare quotes as equivalent, like these we examples, then styled with italics is also an option

Lukas,
I've finally finished proofreading and I have cover proposals, suggestions are of course most welcome:

A woman is the main protagonist of the novel and there is an important scene by the seaside, so this fits. Initially, I was hoping to find a "woman on ship" painting but unfortunately I couldn't find any.

2. The Junction of the Thames and the Medway https://www.nga.gov/artworks/1226-junction-thames-and-medway
You can't go wrong when matching Conrad with a Turner. The connection here would be the Thames, where part of the action of Chance takes place.

The protagonist does have a parasol in one scene, but the boy would have to be cropped out.

This one fits thematically, although we'd need to crop a single woman for the cover.

Best,
Szymon

Those all look good to me! Let me know which one you choose.

Thanks, Lukas! I've decided we need to emphasize the woman protagonist. After experimenting with several mock-ups, I like this one the best:

Would this be an acceptable crop?
