Hello,

I'd like to start with The Rasp by Philip MacDonald.

Please let me know if I can proceed.

Thanks,

Great, that one would be a good start.

This book has a dedication and an epigraph so you'll have to add a half
title page. There are also subchapters, which will be sub <section>s.

Otherwise should be pretty straightforward.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

Thanks for the tips, I was already planning to ask what to do with those subchapters :)

Hi,

I would like to verify typography of this line: “Who the—— ——ing ’ell are you?” The face of Sergeant Higgins was black with wrath.

se typogrify replaces those 4 em dashes and a space with <wj><em-dash><two-em-dash><wj>: “Who the—⸺ing ’ell are you?”

As I see it, the only thing left for me to do is to put the space back between the em dash an two-em dash, since this is interrupted speech followed by obscured word.

Am I correct? Maybe there should be some other punctuation? Maybe I should unobscure the word (as Alex said in some other thread for some other book), because this is definitely a swear word and given that plot happens in the US that word with 90% certainty should be "fucking"?

It doesn't look like modern editions unobscure the curse word. I would say leave it as is, but Alex may say otherwise.

Typically, you don't have a space after an em dash indicating interrupted speech.

It looks like all those dashes should be replaced with a single 2-em
dash: `Who the ⸺ing ’ell are`

Will keep the dash.

Yes, that's why I thought that perhaps there is some punctuation missing.

> It looks like all those dashes should be replaced with a single 2-em dash: `Who the ⸺ing ’ell are`
I guess it can be a way to go but I think that interrupted speech makes sense in the context. Sergeant Higgins gets interrupted by the main character, gets thrown off balance and as a result stutters - starts with one sentence (Who the——) and finishes with another (——ing ’ell are you?). At least that's how I read this.

In the scans that I am using it's two long dashes with a space between them (page 22).

OK, that's fine. I was guessing without looking at the scans.

Hi,

couple more questions regarding the text:
  1. In chapter 15 there seem to be two typos: Madarm and air. They are also present in the scans (page 198/216). I guess I will just [Editorial]ise them away?
  2. I am getting se lint complaint that <p> in dedication starts with lowercase letter. I am following the scans (page -/10) and styling the dedication in smallcaps. Do I add this lint issue to ignore file?
  3. Chapter 4 has a blockquote which represents a written text and inside that text there is a note inside [ ] brackets. Page 46/64 in the scans.
    1. Do I make it separate paragraph? Right after there is an NB which is a separate paragraph, and fully inside <i>. Its same paragraph as preceding text in the scans.
    2. Do I add any semantic inflection on the whole note or on the <i>Note.</i>?
    3. There is another similar note in chapter 17. It is a separate paragraph and it is inside parentheses ( ) instead of brackets - do I change either of these to be the same as the other?
  4. Chapter 9 contains blockquote with letter text inside it. In the first paragraph there is ”—she read—“ inserted into the letter text. What do I do with it? If I leave it as it is, then I should also add quotation marks around all paragraphs in the letter because letter becomes like a dialogue (and then I suppose I should make all similar letters quoted?). In the scans all letters are quoted as dialogue, this particular one is on page 118/136.
Also, do you know of any way to link to a particular page in internet archive? Would add links to scanned pages if I could.

On this last point, just switch to "One-page view" at the right end of the toolbar immediately below the scans, go to the desired page, and copy the URL from the browser. Here's the dedication -

Hope that helps!

1. These look like printer errors. Create an [Editorial] commit with the corrections.

2. The dedication should start with a capital letter. You can style the text with `font-variant-caps: all-small-caps;` to match the page scans.

3. You don't need to change anything. Unsemanticated `<i>` is correct for these instances; they shouldn't be converted into endnotes.

4. Leave "she read" alone. The whole letter should be in quotes, like how it appears in the page scans. Typically we don't remove quotes around quoted letters.
