One early question: do we want to include the single illustration, which is a "fac-simile" page of the (fictional) memoir that follows the editor's introduction? The edition I listed above doesn't appear to have the illustration, but a couple others do. The only reason I am leading toward putting it in is that the book itself refers to the facsimile near the end:

<p>The printed part [i.e., the intro--JR] ends at page 201 and the rest is in a fine old hand, extremely small and close. I have ordered the printer to procure a facsimile of it, to be bound in with the volume. </p>

On the other hand, the text in the facsimile is in the book itself...

Yes, we can include that. Make sure to find the highest res version you
can to keep in ./images/, then scale it down for ./src/epub/images/.

I'm turning back to this, and am uncertain how to structure the book's two chapters: an "editor's narrative" and then the actual memoirs of the sinner. No actual front matter.

Each chapter begins with a faux half-title page -- the idea being you are finally reading the memoir once you reach its 2nd half title.

Here's the order:

THE PRIVATE MEMOIRS AND CONFESSIONS OF A JUSTIFIED SINNER

"The Editor's Narrative" half-title

Editor's Narrative, c. 100 pages

"Private Memoirs and Confession of a Sinner" half-title. (Some editions have The Private Memoirs and Confessions ... as the half-title instead.)

Private Memoirs and Confession of a Sinner, Written by Himself c. 200 pages -- note that the chapter title is not the same as the book title

Should I treat the Narrative like a prologue, much like The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket? Or not overthink it and have two chapters, with no half titles?

Sounds like it's just in two parts. You can use the typical structure of
a book divided into "books" or "divisions". If the preface is fictional
then take inspiration from Pym in the semantics.

Great work John!

For the future, if you work on SVGs we prefer them rotated so that they
fit naturally (we are not constrained by a page size like physical books
are) and they should have a transparent background, not white. I've
changed all that for you.
