Book 1 has quoted prose sections (John Brown’s Prayer and John Brown’s Speech).
Book 2 contains both prose and verse.
There are a lot of mismatched dashes. Since this isn't a translation, the inconsistencies were kept.

Making the dashes consistent will change the meter for the rhymed portions that use iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter. I don't recommend changing it.

But meter depends on a word's stress, and the stress is there regardless
of the presence of a dash. If they're mismatched then it's more than
likely just careless orthography by the printer.
