It seems that this ebook does not allow long-press, i.e. one cannot select a word or phrase and thus cannot highlight, search, translate, etc. and once tried, the ereader goes off into neverland and needs to be closed and reopened. I'm reading this on a Kobo Clara BW, having downloaded the KEPUB version and loaded it via Calibre. It shows on the device as a KOBO EPUB, all normal. I've loaded many other books this same way and I've never had this happen before. For kicks, I downloaded the same book from Project Gutenberg (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4024), using the EPUB3 file, converted to KEPUB on the download to my Kobo, and long-press works fine on this book.
Thought I should report this, as it's a new book and this might help someone else.

As our Kobo instructions say (see the “how to transfer them to your ereader” link on the book’s web page), you should not use calibre to transfer the kepub file.

Thanks. Yes, I read that some time ago and forgot it. I removed the book and transferred the KEPUB file directly to the Kobo ereader using Windows Explorer. Still have the same problem with it. A long-press doesn't work. The book shows on the device as a KOBO EPUB.

It's nothing we're doing on purpose; might be an issue with using
<table> for layout. You can try another drama of a similar length to see
if it occurs with that one too.

Ok, some further details here: The problem only occurs once the dialogue begins in the play. Before that, it's possible to long-press and create a highlight, etc. After the dialogue begins, a long-press doesn't work. I see the same problem with other plays. For example:
In The Man of Destiny by Shaw,
"... sometimes into the ink.
GIUSEPPE Will your excellency- ..."
A long-press works on the word ink, but not on the word Will.
In Candida by Shaw,
"... comic groan of despair.
PROSERPINE Another lecture? ..."
A long-press works on the word despair, but not on the word Another.
In You Never Can Tell by Shaw,
"... tolerably favorable estimate.
THE YOUNG LADY (Handing him the glass. ) Thank you. ..."
A long-press works on the word estimate, but not on the word Handing.
Once the next act begins, a long-press works, again, until the dialogue begins. There's only one act in The Man of Destiny.
Hope this helps narrow down where the formatting problem is occurring.

Dialog is within <table>, so maybe Kobo disallows selecting table
contents. You should contact Kobo as this is a bug in their renderer,
not an issue on our end.

Oh nuts, this is probably fallout from my patch to get Apple Books not opening a mini table viewer for drama. I‘ll make a PR to make the CSS target only Books.

Actually, it is (an issue on our end).
Apple Books has a table viewer that displays an expanded table view when a table is clicked on. This is handy in, e.g., Gibbon, but not so handy when an SE drama, when a click anywhere in the dialog results in the table view. Someone reported it last month, Robin tracked down the cause, and put in a PR to disable pointer events in the drama tables, allowing them on endnotes and other links.
Unfortunately, that has the effect that you can no longer long press on words to highlight them, etc., and since it’s in the compatibility CSS, it has that effect everywhere, including Kobo.
(a really small text table in drama when anything is clicked on; Robin put in a change last month to prevent clicks on it, allowing it for things like endnotes and other links. Apparently it has the side effect that you can’t highlight words, etc., any more, in Apple Books as well as everywhere else.
We should probably just target Apple Books for that change, but even then, we won’t be able to highlight in Apple Books drama tables. (Books distinguishes between a press and a long-press; without the compatibility change, you can long press and highlight, but then tapping to get rid of the highlight dialog results in the table view. So, annoying either way.)
