For my next project I would to propose a collection of fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen (surprised no one did it before). There is already a spreadsheet with a list of the stories. I found a total of 172 stories written by him, 170 of which were translated into English and 117 are in the public domain. The proposed edition would therefore have 117 stories, 2 of which I would transcribe. A further 52 will PD in 20 years and won't be present in this edition.

Most of of the stories would use the H. B. Paull translation, which are some of the most popular versions since their original publication. A few other stories have different translators, all showing in the spreadsheet. I couldn't find the translator for 6 of the stories, which would have the publisher, Ginn and Company, listed as the translator.

For the cover, I'm thinking this painting is a good choice, because of "The Little Mermaid," one of his most famous story.

Do you think this is project is viable?

All of the transcriptions and scan links are in the spreadsheet.

OK, sure. The link you sent to your repo is broken, can you send a new one?

Good choice of artwork, I'll assign it.

Must have pasted it wrong. Here's the correct one.

The spreadsheet lists theses as a "short fiction" omnibus. I think he
wrote both fairy tales and other short fiction. So we should update the
spreadsheet to accurately list what stories go in what omnibus. It would
also be helpful to update it to include his complete short fiction
corpus so we're clear on what goes into fairy tales and what is left over.

(Or, did he *only* write fairy tales?)

I put "short fiction" in the spreadsheet because I wasn't sure if you would prefer a collection named "Fairy Tales." I'll update the current entries, since I believe all of them would go into a fairy tales omnibus. Wikipedia lists some short stories, but all of them are (in my opinion) fairy tales. The classification in either short story or fairy tale is ultimately arbitrary, and depends on how each person classifies each. I consider the entries in the spreadsheet to be fairy tales because they mostly follow a formula of a short prose text with moral lessons and without much realism (exceptions can occur, but I think this definition works for most works of the genre, either by Andersen or other authors).

There is also a collection of very short stories called A Picture-Book without Pictures, which follow several evenings ("first evening," "second evening," etc), which I'm not sure how to classify. It could be either be considered fairy tales or general fiction. He also wrote some novels, travelogues and essay, none of which would be a part of this collection.

Do you think the A Picture-Book without Pictures should be included here? Based on the what I could find, there isn't really material for both a Short Fiction and a Fairy Tales edition, since if search for "Hans Christian Andersen short stories" you get a list of fairy tales.

Once I get you opinion about this material I can update the spreadsheet and start the project.

Actually, on further research, most of the content in A Picture Book without Pictures is actually present in a story called "What the Moon Saw," which seems to been a rewriting of the older stories. I assume we don't want both versions, so which one do we think we should have?

OK, you should make a note of that in the spreadsheet, this kind of
situation is exactly why the spreadsheet is important. I don't know
which one we should use; presumably the later one. But if What The Moon
Saw is a fairy tale, then I assume Picture Book is also a fairy tale?

I think your suggestion of a short tale with a moral lesson, plus some
kind of legendary/supernatural slant, is a fine definition of a fairy
tale. Anything that is not that, can be called "Short fiction". So we
have to decide how to classify these and whether both a "fairy tale" and
"short fiction" omnibus are necessary, or if just one of them is.

I think I'll take a look at each story and check if any can be realistic considered a short story instead of a fairy tale. If I find any I'll update and not add to the current project. After I'm confident of which ones are appropriate I can start working on the project.

I skimmed over the stories, and I think all of them are appropriate for the collection. The amount of supernatural elements and moral lessons is not the same in every story, but all of them feel like fairy tales to me, and so I would add them all to the collection. Another characteristic of these stories is their short length. Nearly all of them are very short ("The Ice-Maiden" might be the longest, but it is still under 20k words). The length of course doesn't define the genre, but it is a very common occurrence.

You or anyone else can of course have another opinion, but I would add all of the stories currently marked as "Fairy Tales" in the spreadsheet. The only work that I think doesn't really fit is a story written when he was 17, called "The Ghost at Palnatoke's Grave," (I couldn't locate a translation yet anyway) which could be considered juvenilia, but regardless I don't think it fits in this collection.

Regarding the A Picture Book without Pictures, I think both it and "What the Moon Saw" can be considered fairy tales, and I would add "A Picture Book without Pictures," since this has more content, with the later having some vignettes removed. Although is appears to be several different stories, it is actually a series of vignettes told by a character, which I think makes it appropriate to be a single text with subsections. What do you think?

Two questions: Some stories were published in two editions (here and here) which without the translator being credited. Who do you think should be credited, J. H. Stickney (the editor) or the Ginn and Company (the publisher)? Also, can I apply the filter to the extra columns I added to the spreadsheet? I don't want to accidentally break the spreadsheet.

As such, I would start working on a collection with the 117 stories in the public domain and with transcriptions and scans available. Do you think otherwise?

OK, that sounds fine. What about the items that are not yet PD? If those
are also fairy tales then they should be listed as belonging in the
omnibus.

I've created the project, Robin will manage with Vince reviewing.

For the translator name let's go with the editor, but if they appeared
in many editions they could be recompilations of previous translations
that appeared elsewhere, perhaps with credits. It would be worth it to
search Google Books for a few key phrases to see if anything comes up.

Also you can use the filters on the sheet, that's fine.

I'll make a search with some sentences and paragraphs from some of the stories without a credited translator (they might have been in fact translated by the editor, as far as I know). If I can't find an edition with the proper credit, I'll just use his name.

Another thing: when creating the draft, an error occurs which creates a draft without a titlepage and cover. This is due to one of the translators (Hans Lien Brækstad) having the character "æ" in his name. If I change it to "ae" the draft becomes normal. We usually remove ligatures, but this one seems to be the proper spelling of a given name, how do you think I should deal with this?

This is already fixed in master. If you want to use the dev version of
the toolset you can do that, otherwise just skip the cover/titlepage for
now and you can rebuild it when the next version of the toolset is released.

I'm doing work on organizing and cleaning the files. I wanted to confirm which, if any, of the frontmatter content we want.

Introduction

Personally, I think the prefaces are not really interesting, being part of their particular editions. The memoir doesn't seem to quit fit the book as well. The introduction, I feel, is the only one that might be wanted, but I'm not sure. What do you think?

Also, I believe you didn't assigned the artwork, Alex.

Definitely not the prefaces. Including both the memoir and the introduction feels excessive, so let’s (as you suggested) go with just the introduction.
