Hi Alex

I'd like to take on "On a Chinese Screen" next (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/48788). Looks like the only scans available online for the 1922 edition are at PGDP (https://www.pgdp.org/ols/tools/display.php?page=001.png&id=projectID51e83a4e22990), but that should be OK.

Looks straightforward and short, so hopefully I'll get it done in good time!

Hope that sounds OK.

Thanks
Cheers, Lan

Actually, I just realised that I can get the page scans from Google. Just had to be "in the US" to do so.

Hi Alex

I'd like to propose the following painting for the cover of this book:

Finches and bamboo, by Emperor Huizong, early 12th century
Available from The Met and in the public domain according to them.

It's not an oil painting of course, but there are precious few oil paintings on a Chinese subject available in the public domain etc. I note that we've used Chinese brush paintings before for the covers of relevant books so hope that this one will do.

Thanks
Cheers, Lan

I think that's too far of a stretch. What about something like a
landscape? See also Edwin Lord Weeks who had a career of Orientalist
paintings.

Hi Alex

OK. Unfortunately Edwin Weeks didn't visit China. However, I've managed to find George Chinnery, who did. I propose using his painting "Coolies Round the Food Vendor's Stall", from around 1825. Maugham spends quite a bit of time talking about the Chinese coolies in his stories, so the subject is quite appropriate.

The Yale Center for British Art holds it and says its public domain (https://collections.britishart.yale.edu/catalog/tms:608).

Hope that works better.

Thanks
Cheers, Lan

Without weighing in on whether it’s a good cover, it’s not CC0. Just “public domain” is not enough, the license must be CC0. Or, if you can find a copy of it in a book printed before 1925. See section 10.3.3.6 of the manual.

Oops. OK, thanks. Third time lucky.

There is a painting of the Canton Waterfront (The Hongs at Canton), by an unknown artist, c. 1840. Available from The Met as Open Access - CC0.

https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/14265

I would just use a detail of it, seeing as it's in landscape, probably the section to the left of the painting, featuring the Chinese junk.

Thanks

Cheers, Lan

First, can you run typogrify again? A couple of changes come up.

  • chapter 6:
    • The subchapter headings need the same hgroup semantics as the main chapter (although with h3 and h4 instead). Potentially the sections need subchapter semantics as well as se:short-story? Once you’ve done that, run build-toc again to fix it.
    • zakouski isn’t in MW so needs italicising
  • chapter 49: modernize-spelling flags entree -> entrée
  • colophon:
    • your name needs a wrapping <b epub:type=“z3998:personal-name>
    • The painting name is missing a closing parenthesis
    • Can we change “completed in c. 1840” to “completed around 1840”
    • Anonymous needs a <b> but doesn’t need z3998:personal-name semantics
  • content.opf:
    • longdesc: wrap W. in an <abbr>

Apart from that, the cover is, well, not particularly inspiring :/ The source is pretty low-res at just 700px high, so we’re already upsampling 3 times for the final version. I can’t find anything obviously better, but maybe a gigapixel resize and a recrop might help?

Here’s a GP uprez of the full painting. With most of the action in the lower part of the picture, the title box is probably going to be an issue.

Hi Robin

Thanks for this.

That version of the painting is much better. I added a few more (cloned) pixels to the bottom to make the title box fit, which I think works. Hope that's OK.

I've fixed most of the issues you raised. Just two spelling queries:
  • "Zakouski" is in MW as "zakuski" (plural of zakuska) so should I change the spelling or leave it as is?
  • "Entree" is listed as an alternative spelling to "entrée", so does it need to be changed?
Thanks
Cheers, Lan

modernize-spelling will automatically change entree -> entrée (at least on the dev version) so I’d just do that. I’m fine with leaving zakouski as is, but I’d also be fine with an editorial commit to match MW. Up to you.

Apart from that, looks good!
