Hello!

Having just survived my first production, I'm anxious to do another! I'd love to take on "Sailing Alone Around the World" by Joshua Slocum, which is certainly high on anyone's list of all-time great adventure/travel books.

The text itself looks straight-forward. The more involved aspect will be the illustrations -- about 65 of them, all engraving style.

I'm ok with Photoshop, and have a Gigapixel license, so I thinkI have the tools and chops to turn the images into decent resolution black and white images. (I'll no doubt have a couple of specific questions about size and format once I dive in).

The text and scanned images are available on PG at https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/6317 , and the internet archive has a good scan at https://archive.org/details/bwb_T5-CWQ-188/page/n319/mode/2up .

Shall I proceed?

Sure. This one has already been attempted before, see
https://groups.google.com/g/standardebooks/c/_Dsf5MHNcag/m/mkKNQsxJBwAJ

Note my intro email - we would cut most of the decorative illustrations
but keep the ones that you judge not to be decorative.

Please send a link to your repo once you start.

Hi David and Robin...

I'm plugging along on the text, and have a question for the two of you.

There are numerous dates in the book. Many are full dates (month, date, and year) like this...

On the morning of May 5, 1896, I sailed from Juan Fernandez...

...where it's straight-forward to add a <time> tag, like this...

On the morning of <time datetime="1896-05-05">May 5, 1896</time>, I sailed from Juan Fernandez

...but in many other instances just a date is given, like this...

I sailed again, May 9, before a strong southwest wind,...

Since the book's narrative is in chronological order, I have no trouble inferring the year of these dates (in this case 1897). Since I'm certain of the full date, should I just go ahead and give these types of dates a <time> element too, like this...

          I sailed again, <time datetime="1897-0509">May 9</time>, before a strong southwest wind,...

?

Thanks!

Chris

Hi again...

I'm wondering if you can tell me if this SVG seems correct (before I generate all of the SVGs I want to use). I'm attaching it, and the .jpg I used to generate it. Thanks!

As I mentioned, we want to cut almost all of these illustrations. We're
only interested in the ones essential to the plot, i.e. maps, diagrams,
items directly referred to in the text (i.e. "below is a drawing of the
gun I used" or the like)

Meanwhile, that SVG isn't quite according to SE standards. It would be a good idea to see what they look like from a previous production. Choosing pretty much at random, you could have a look (in a text editor) at these from the Pit Prop Syndicate. (But note now the filename conventions in SEMoS.)

There are at least a couple good guides to help:
  1. The SVG "How To", although the "multi-colour" bit doesn't apply here; and
  2. this post from a previous production which I've bookmarked and refer to.
(There are other posts like that here, but that one probably suffices.)

If you get stuck, let us know and we'll do our best to help! Producing SVGs can be tricky and time-consuming, but once you've cracked one, it does get "easier". :)

Thanks for the advice David! I followed the steps in the second example, and I think the new batch of SVGs (uploaded on my github repo) and more correct. (I originally exported from Adobe Illustrator, which for some reason used <image> inside of the SVG, instead of <path>.

Closing in on finishing the text, so I wanted to turn my attention to the choice of cover art. Ironically I think the one thing the cover art can NOT show is a boat, since any boat in a CC0  art work would not be the Spray, the boat Slocum actually sailed around the world.

So I'm thinking of using a work already in the artworks collection, The Wave by C. R. W. Nevinson https://standardebooks.org/artworks/c-r-w-nevinson/the-wave

Here's the mockup...

That could work. My inclination would be to crop more loosely, though ... and maybe try the left side for the crop, rather than the right?

The previous attempt at this title was going to use a Gustave Courbet painting (the speck of a sail in the distance!), which provides another option. Could you take a look and see what you think? Just let me know which you settle on, and I'll make the assignment.

Actually, the Courbet image works great! Let's go with that.

Super - I've made the assignment for the Courbet in the Artworks DB. Thanks for trying the different crop on the Nevinson option; the Courbet still works better, I think!

OK, I think I'm done, with just a couple of possible issues, or at least things I want to call to your attention/get your advice on...

In chapter 15 there's an HTML table. There are a million ways to style a table in CSS of course, and I think I did a reasonable approach. It does however use a couple of empty <td> cells, which the linter doesn't like. I made an entry in the se-lint-ignore.xml file to cover that. Let me know if that's not OK.

In chapter 11 there are there's this bit of text...

A native of Largo, in the county of Fife, Scotland, who lived on this island in complete solitude for four years and four months. He was landed from the Cinque Ports galley, 96 tons, 18 guns, AD 1704, and was taken off in the Duke, privateer, 12th February, 1709. He died Lieutenant of H. M. S. WeymouthAD 1723,1 aged 47. This tablet is erected near Selkirk’s lookout, by Commodore Powell and the officers of H. M. S. TopazeAD 1868.

Those three instances of "AD" are marked up like this...

<abbr epub:type="se:era z3998:initialism">AD</abbr>

...but the linter doesn't seem to like that. I get a "Semantic found, but missing corresponding CSS style" error for local.css. What if anything should I add to local.css? (Or should I add another entry in se-lint-ignore.xml)?

Other than that, I think I'm ready for inspection!

I’ll have a look at this over the next couple of days. On the table, I’ll check it in review and see if I can recommend any improvements.

On the dates, did you include the era CSS? https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.8.7/8-typography#8.9.5

Ah crap, somehow I didn't see the se:era CSS! Added it to local.css and that fixed the issue. Just pushed that to my repo. Thanks for catching that!

You’re getting table warnings because you’ve got cells with just whitespace in them. If you replace them with completely empty elements (<td/>) then you won’t need an se-lint-ignore.xml.

Running lint I’m seeing a few more errors. The imprint is missing references to the scans, and the colophon has a bunch of missing information. Can you complete these?

I’ll start the review after these are done.

Ah, good to know about <td></td> vs <td/>. Corrected that, and deleted the lint ignore file, since it's no longer needed.

And sorry about missing the fields in colophon and other pages. I'm discovering that I'm getting different results from se lint depending on which directory I'm in when I run it. I think I got the hang of things now.

Anyway, I believe the repo is now ready for you.

One more thing while I’m working on the rest of the review: can you run typogrify, semanticate and clean again, then run lint one more time and fix the remaining things. There’s nothing major, but it saves writing it out.

Will do! I’ll let you know when I’m done.

Ok, typogrify, semanticate, clean, and lint (in that order) all run again.

Recommended changes from typogrify, semanticate, and clean all accepted and checked in.

Lint's errors and manual review items all corrected/accepted and checked in, with these two final exceptions....

In Chapter 3, Line 15, lint calls for a manual review for this passage...

The sloop making eight knots. Fresh breeze <abbr epub:type="se:compass z3998:initialism">N. W.</abbr>”

...due to the space in the "N. W." compass heading.  But the MoS 8.10.8 says keep the space, so I have.

In Chapter 6, Line 25 I have this...

the whole thing blushed like the brass binnacle of a <abbr epub:type="z3998:initialism">P. &amp; O.</abbr> steamer.

The linter also thinks there should be no spaces on either side of the ampersand character, but I think there should be. Would you like me to keep both of those as I have them, and add a se-lint-ignore.xml file for them, or make the changes?

Other than those two items, I believe everything is done.

I think the compass issue is a bug in the linter. I’ve filed a fix at https://github.com/standardebooks/tools/pull/966 but let’s see what Alex thinks.

On P. & O. you can split it into two abbreviations, one for the P and one for the O.

OK, I’ve filed a set of issues at https://github.com/chrisspurgeon/joshua-slocum_sailing-alone-around-the-world/issues/1. There’s a fair bit there, but hopefully nothing too hard to resolve. Once you’ve fixed those let me know and I’ll do a second sweep.

Hi again Robin, thanks for the thorough review! I think I've corrected everything. I just re-ran typogrify, semanicate, clean and lint and everything passes (with the exception of that one incorrect warning in lint about the space in "N. W.". I'm ready for another inspection.

Thanks, that looks great.

After some discussion with Alex, we’re no longer going to use z3998:initialism for compass directions. I’ve updated the toolset to not do that, but it doesn’t fix your repo (and isn’t released yet anyway). So can you fix that manually? It’s changing all epub:type="se:compass z3998:initialism" to epub:type="se:compass". After that run clean once more and we’re done.

OK, all done!

se clean had one little final change, I've checked that in too.

Thanks!

OK, looks good Chris, I've released it. Great work on the SVGs and on
this fairly complex book. Thanks!
