As an in between for Beatrix Potter image manipulation I thought I’d make a start on an Edgar Allen Poe poetry collection. There’s a comprehensive list at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poems_by_Edgar_Allan_Poe along with publication dates. https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2151 seems to have transcriptions of most of them; it might be all, but I haven’t done a full check yet. I’m using https://archive.org/details/worksedgarallan00unkngoog for source scans.

I was wondering about using one of the other Delauny Saint-Séverin paintings for the cover, but they’re all much closer than I remembered. But I’ll try to find something of a similar style. If nothing comes up then I guess going with a raven is a good fallback.

The PG source includes a “Hymn to Aristogeiton and Harmodius”, which turns out to be a translation of a Greek original possibly by Callistratus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmodius_and_Aristogeiton#Skolia . Would we want to include translations of non-original works in a Poetry compilation?

No, because that poem would go in a "callistratus poetry" compilation.

Good, that’s in line with what I was thinking.

Back on this while waiting on the Potter review. For cover art, I wanted to see if this Redon would be acceptable? Double-checking because it’s not an oil: ”Various charcoals and gouache, with pastel and black chalk, and touches of stumping and erasing, on pale-pink wove paper with red and blue fibers altered to a golden tone, laid down on gray wove paper”. Obviously fine if not, I’ll find an alternative.

I think it looks close enough. PD proof?

OK, finally ready for review I think. Repo: https://github.com/robinwhittleton/edgar-allan-poe_poetry . Production notes:

  • I’d assumed that this would be pretty easy as Poe’s corpus was sure to be well defined. Turns out that it’s so well defined as to include everything half-finished, misattributed, and sketchy. In the end I removed everything that wasn’t easily attributed to Poe and complete.
  • The primary source volume I used contained the majority of poems, but there were a handful (“An Acrostic”, “Elizabeth”, and “Serenade”) that required an second scan and Wikisource transcripts.
  • Ordering came mostly from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poems_by_Edgar_Allan_Poe rather than the scan ordering.
  • Cover art as discussed earlier in the thread.
  • The indentation is… complex. I’ve tried to replicate it as best as possible, but we’re up to .i7 in the CSS.
  • Gutenberg source differed from the scans a little; with a bit of research from eapoe.org it seems that the scans are one publication later than the Gutenberg source. It was mostly typography, but also missing verses, etc. To the best of my ability I fixed it all up to meet the scans (which were more readable), and submitted back to Gutenberg the broken parts that were definitely transcription faults.

Let me know if anything isn’t clear.

Vince, do you have time to review this?

I opened an issue to ask you a question yesterday, Robin, but it doesn’t show you as a participant, so maybe you didn’t get notified?

Sorry, life outside of SE is busy at the moment. I do get automatically notified about issues, and have just replied.

All right, Robin, I finally had to time to devote to this today. It looks great as always; poetry formatting wears me out in a minor scale, so I’m impressed with your work in a major scale. :) I opened an issue with a few quibbles.

No. Review highlighted a bunch of stuff I’d missed, and I was feeling pretty overwhelmed with a bunch of stuff at the time. I’ve now cleared out a bunch of outstanding stuff at both work and pretty much everything else with SE, so I’m ready to come back to this next. We’ll, assuming Toilers doesn’t turn into a huge review too 😅

All right, Alex, I believe this is ready for you.

As Robin noted to me on the review issue, find-mismatched-dashes shows some differences, but because it’s poetry he left them as is. I’m not sure what our policy is, either; to me, whether it’s “to-night” or “tonight” it’s pronounced the same, so I don’t know how it could interrupt meter. Same for the three others, which are all two-syllable words that are going to be pronounced as two syllables either way. But, I am bereft of any knowledge or understanding of poetry, so my thoughts are worth absolutely nothing. :)
