Hello all,

I'm running into an odd issue. I've been proofreading, and correcting what I thought were a decent amount of typos, until I discovered part of a phrase that was different in the transcription versus the page scans. I've been referring to the page scans to make these corrections, which is the most up-to-date edition of the book (the ninth). I found a first edition copy, and it turns out what I thought were typos were in fact the punctuation and phrasing in the original edition.

So in the first edition, for example, one sentence reads:

I have called this book “What Is Wrong with the World?” and the upshot of the title can be easily and clearly stated.

But in the ninth edition (which what I'm using), it reads:

I have called this book “What Is Wrong with the World,” but the rather wild title refers only to one point.

Now, it seems like based on Standard Ebooks policy, we go with the latest edition of the book (unless there are really good reasons to do otherwise). Assuming I should stick with the latest edition of the book, then if I'm changing punctuation and even parts of phrases in the transcription (which is based on the first edition) to conform to latest edition of the book (which are the page scans I'm using), is that an Editorial commit? (Because, while it is changing content in the transcription, it's conforming to the page scans of the ninth edition, so the author is the one who originally changed the content.)

Yes, we’d typically pick the book that’s the most recent and the most complete: we’re aiming for readability here. In this case we’re looking for conformance to the scans, so no [Editorial] needed, but I’m a bit worried that there are major changes that are going to be a lot of work to adjust. Is there an alternative transcript that already has the revised edition? For example, the scans are from 1910 and the Gutenberg Australia edition also claims to be from then: https://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks13/1301251h.html. If that matches the scans would it be better to start over with that? (I make no judgement here, it’s your call.)

Hello Robin,

OK, thanks. The changes haven't been super-extensive. It does require a line-by-line comparison, but the book isn't that long, I've already put in a good chunk of work in, and the changes aren't extensive. The main changes have been from commas to semicolons and vice versa. And honestly, it's more helpful because then I can catch other stuff, too. (If the book was twice or three times as long, however, I'd probably start anew.) So I'll keep going with what I'm doing.

I've checked the PG Australia transcription, as well as Wikisource, and it looks like both of those are also the first edition. So I'll have to update the transcription anyway. At least I won't be wondering whether or not I'm wasting my time!

There's been various changes of that sort, but there have been parts of entire phrases that have been changed as well, such as "Man is a quadruped" altered to "Man is on all fours." But that's pretty rare.
