I recently finished reading The Giant Raft and have some suggestions for modernize spelling and a couple other issues. Since the suggested changes for modern spelling are numerous (over 50), I put them in a numbered list, so you can easily tell which (if any) of the changes you think are appropriate:

Recommended changes:

[1] Abaete -> Abaeté
[2] Alvarez -> Álvares
[3] Amasenas -> Amazonas
[4] Amazones -> Amazonas
[5] antas (add language tag)
[6] Araujo -> Araújo
[7] assais -> açaís
[8] beiju -> beijo
[9] Bella Vista -> Bela Vista
[10] Belem -> Belém
[11] bentivis -> bem-ti-vis
[12] Braza -> Brasa
[13] citade -> cidade
[14] cipo -> cipó
[15] coui -> cuia
[16] Diario d'o Grand Para -> Either Diário do Grão-Pará or Diário do Grande Pará. I believe Grand Para refers to Grão-Pará, an imperial province of Brazil, but in modern speech Grand is very similar to Grande (great, big), so I'm not sure what the best spelling would be.
[17] enchada -> enxada
[18] gaviao -> gavião
[19] Goyas - Goiás
[20] guarana -> guaraná
[21] Jacarandas -> Jacarandás
[22] Jose -> José
[23] Jurua -> Juruá
[24] Mae d'Aqua -> Mãe d'Água
[25] Magalhaës -> Magalhães
[26] Manaos -> Manaus
[27] manteigna -> manteiga
[28] Marajo -> Marajó
[29] Maranhao -> Maranhão
[30] Minas Geraes -> Minas Gerais
[31] minhocao -> minhocão
[32] Monto Alegre -> Monte Alegre
[33] navigar de bubina -> navegar de bobina
[34] Para -> Pará
[35] pao ferro -> pau-ferro
[36] Parana -> Paraná
[37] perros voladors (it has Portuguese language semantics, it should have Spanish instead, also voladors should be voladores)
[38] piassaba -> piassava or piaçaba
[39] Piaçaba (there is an English word called piassava)
[40] reis -> réis
[41] Rio Janeiro -> Rio de Janeiro (I couldn't find any place called simply Rio Janeiro, it most likely refers to Rio de Janeiro, the then capital of Brazil)
[42] Santarem -> Santarém
[43] sitios -> sítios
[44] Solimaës -> Solimões
[45] Solimoens -> Solimões (chapter 1 - XVIII)
[46] Solimao -> Solimão
[47] tafia -> táfia
[48] tamandoa -> tamunduá
[49] Tapajoz -> Tapajós
[50] Villa Bella -> Vila Bela
[51] Villa Rica -> Vila Rica

Possible changes (you'll likely not want to change any of these, but I thought I should bring them up):

bromelia -> bromélia (If refering to the genus, keep the spelling, if refering to the Portuguese word, change it)
Don Juan -> Dom João
King John VI. (extra period)
manchetta -> machete
seriemas (remove italics?)

Typos:

abgove the summits -> above the summits
Mina (should it be Minha)

Besides those, the name Joam is certainly a French approximation of João ("John"), and should possibly be changed to the Portuguese spelling. If so, then a <span xml:lang="pt"> might be in order, since English speakers often struggle to pronounce nasal vowels like this. I'm aware that this would be an unusual approach, but it might be worth considering.

If you think any of these changes are appropriate I can make a PR.

Sounds like modernizations and typo fixes you can make. The first list
all looks fine.

The second list is not sound alike so we would not do that. However you
would remove the period after a roman numeral, see
https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.8.2/single-page#8.8.5.3

I made most of the changes, another one I noticed:

cæsalpinas: it has a Portuguese language tag, but it seems to the refer to the genus of trees, maybe it should lose the ligature?

You didn't said anything about Joam, I assume it shouldn't be changed?

Thanks for making these changes. I found the spellings and languages challenging and wasn’t sure whether the spellings should remain as they were or not.

Doesn't sound sound-alike to me
