I'd like to do this text as a first project:

It's not on the list of Wanted Ebooks but it's around a 100K words in length so similar to some other books on the list.

Cool if I run with this one?

Great, that one would be a good start.

There's some poetry and letters in there - see the manual for copy and
paste styling. Otherwise, looks fairly straightforward.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

Emma, can you manage this with David reviewing?

OK by me.  BTW, this and its sequel were among my father’s favourite books. He was a huge Jeffrey Farnol fan.

Rich, can you be sure to mention my name when you post that it’s ready for review, otherwise I might miss it?

(I believe) I've done the bulk of the SE process; I'm now reading the generated artefact on my Kindle as the "proofread, proofread, proofread" step.

The content could be reviewed by a second reviewer at this point; here's a link to the GitHub repo:

The lint command is (correctly) squawking about the cover image and metadata: I'll sort those in the near future once the cover image process is complete.

I expect I'll have read the book cover to cover in a couple of weeks when it'll have any fixes I find during the read through.

I'm thinking of using this image for the cover:

There's a scan of that picture in the following link;  an image from the same book was used in the SE production of Sabatini's Captain Blood so I hope it's good to go:

The SE manual of style is excellent; I expect I've made a fair few mistakes in this first project for which I beg forgiveness.

Tagging David.

Great. Typically reviewers come in you're done proofreading and you
think the entire ebook is totally complete.

The art looks good, but can you find page scans that are published in
the PD era? It looks like the page scans you found are from a book
published in 2011 and IA is limiting access.

Great; I'll ping back in a couple of weeks once the proofreading and corrections are committed.

Yes, I'll do that; my next message to this topic will have such a link.

I've completed my proofreading of the text; so many errant apostrophes *wilt*

>  [C]an you find page scans that are published in the PD era?

Yes; here's a scan from a book published in 1921; I'll see about de-saturating it if it passes muster.

The lint command is (correctly) squawking about the cover image and metadata: I'll sort those once the cover image process is complete.

Rich: I'm seeing a lot of lint errors, as you suggest these are mostly (but not all) to do with the cover art. I'd prefer to wait on my review until you've done that process. Also, you should remove the Dockerfile and delete se-lint-ignore before I proceed. One of the lint errors relates to an out of date version of our uncopyright.xml. If you update the toolset and copy that file across from the templates it should fix that error.

Just wanted to check in here Rich. Have you been able to clean up the
lint errors so that we can start a review and wrap things up?
