Not sure if this replaces the original 2015 Guardian collection we have, but it looks like they’ve got a wide voting panel (20-1 not yet revealed). https://www.theguardian.com/books/ng-interactive/2026/may/12/the-100-best-novels-of-all-time

I think it can stand as its own collection, we'd just tag it with a year
like the previous one. I haven't looked but I assume many of the entries
will be the same. Let's wait until it it's complete and then we can add
them.

Sure, you can go ahead and add those to existing books. Same naming
convention as the previous best-of list. Then we also need the
placeholders added for the books we don't have yet.

I've given your account powers to do that. Go to
    https://standardebooks.org/ebook-placeholders/new for the form. Should
be pretty self explanatory. If an ebook placeholder already exists, you
can go to that placeholder's page and click 'edit' to add the collection
without having to re-input the entire ebook data again.

Before I go ahead and start committing, when you say the same naming convention, do you mean “The Guardian’s Best 100 Novels in English (2026)”, or following their article naming of “The Guardian’s 100 Best Novels of All Time (2026)”?

Yes, put the year, because they already did this in 2003:
    https://www.theguardian.com/books/2003/oct/12/features.fiction

I suppose we should also get the 2003 version in there too, though do
    they differ very much?

Yep. Middlemarch doesn’t appear in the 2003 one, and Pilgrim’s Progress isn’t in the 2026 one. But I can add them both.

OK, I added all the 2026 list (https://standardebooks.org/collections/the-guardians-100-best-novels-of-all-time-2026) with the exception of Nineteen Eighty-Four, Midnight's Children, Lolita, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Rebecca, The Talented Mr Ripley, and Catch-22. All of those already have at least three collections assigned to them, and the UI can’t seemingly handle adding more?

    Great, thanks!

Yes, the UI can only handle 3 collections because it was (and is) highly
unlikely that a book would be in more than 3. I'll just add them by hand
    to the DB.

Added the 2003 list at https://standardebooks.org/collections/the-guardians-100-greatest-novels-of-all-time-2003. Turns out the reason books jumped around between this and the other Guardian lists is that this one is in order of first publication. (There’s some overlap because Guardian went with their original publication dates and I’ve been adding the English translation dates.)

Anyway, the remaining items are these that already have 3+ collections:

    • Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
    • Scoop - Evelyn Waugh
    • The Big Sleep - Raymond Chandler
    • Nineteen Eighty-Four - George Orwell
    • Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger
    • Lord of the Flies - William Golding
    • On the Road - Jack Kerouac
    • Lolita Vladimir - Nabokov
    • The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - Muriel Spark
    • Catch-22 - Joseph Heller
    • Northern Lights - Philip Pullman

Then we have these three that I’m not sure what to do in the SE system, as they’re trilogies:

    • USA - John Dos Passos
    • The Lord Of The Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
    • The New York Trilogy - Paul Auster

    Thoughts?

For trilogies you can put each book in the same position in the collection.

Interesting now to see the Guardian's "Reader's Choice" Top 100, quite a different list as you might imagine.

Not a lot on it from 19thC or earlier ... and no Trollope at all (WHAT? HOW!), just like the "official" list. Harumph.

Interesting "Stats and Errors" link, Tim!

I guess that means at least _My Antonia_ needs updating here (no longer #100, but #78). Are there others that will need tweaking?

Barchester Towers was #112 even so.

Sure, Robin can you take a look to see what needs to be corrected here?

    Sure. So:

    1. A new placeholder for The Outsider created at #71
    2. Current #71–76 move down one spot
    3. My Ántonia moved to #78
    4. Current #77-98 move down two spots
    5. The Go-Between’s placeholder is deleted

I’ll try to do that this weekend.

I’m completed this update, but found a bug in the system in the process. If I edit a placeholder that has more than 3 collections it silently removes those above 3. Here’s the dataloss as far as I can work out based on web archive entries. Can you fix these Alex? (And maybe have a think about how to avoid silent dataloss in this situation? Even just refusing to update if there are more than 3 entries already would be preferable.)

    OK great, thanks.

I've fixed the bug in the website and restored those collections.

Now, if you're editing a placeholder, all collections will be listed; if
there are more than 3, a blank collection will appear at the end so you
can add another one if necessary.
