With a nice little Gogol to clear the palette out of the way, I turn back to Christopher's excellent spreadsheet and see that the next Shaw play to do is Androcles and the Lion. Page scans are here and the transcription is here, and I'll post my repository when I have one.

The preface has two levels of heading hierarchy, as you can see on the table of contents here; this seems an odd way of organising it, with sections within the preface on the same level of hierarchy as the preface header itself. I'd like to change it to <h3> and <h4> sectioning, with a close reading determining which level which sections are at, so will make that change in an [editorial] commit. Does that seem appropriate?

Apart from that, there's an endnote or two and an <ol>, but nothing heinous. I'll build a dramatis persona and add a halftitlepage as usual, and run through the expected orthography modifications to undo the Shavian lack of apostrophes. There's also a postscript appended to the end of the last act by a <hr>; I would propose to split this into a separate file that I can give backmatter semantics.

For the cover image, the perfect painting would be Androcles and the Lion (1908) by Briton Riviere, currently in the collection of the Auckland Art Gallery, which I have submitted to the art DB here. I can't find a higher-res version of that, so would appreciate the help of someone with an image upscaler.

The play itself is fairly short but my life is busy at the moment, so I'm not anticipating having this done in the next little while unless it turns out that I need a distraction from life and the introduction is more readable than I think it will be.

OK, please send a link to your repo so I can assign you a manager who
will help you with all of these points.

It's interesting to note how the Wikisource transcription of the preface (which I will be using) divides the sections into groupings. I think the sections that they divide up make sense, but I don't know if I agree with the invented <h2> or <h3> elements (especially "Christianity" following "John," which does not appear in the page scans I have seen), so I think that I will not follow that specifically.

OK, Lukas will manage with Vince reviewing. Lukas can you take a look at
Asher's comments at the top of this thread?

Yeah it's a bit of a strange division, whoever transcribed the preface for Wikisource had the same difficulties I guess. Your proposal sounds fine.

For the cover image, the perfect painting would be Androcles and the Lion (1908) by Briton Riviere.

Good find! I've approved and assigned it.

Alex, the name of the painter is in our DB already as "Riviére", but according to Wikipedia the accent should be in the other direction, i.e. "Rivière".

Thanks! It’s my best cover art find since A Doll’s House when I found a painting of a doll’s house by literally walking past it in person in the Rijksmuseum and deciding then and there to produce that play.

As to my earlier question - is there anybody who has access to image upscaling that could help me expand this painting for the cover?

I changed the URL from large to xlarge to get https://artgallery-collection.cdn.aucklandunlimited.com/records/images/xlarge/11772/1c109cdef8904b0cd97756386983cff768016342.jpg which is considerably bigger 🙂
