Hello everyone,

For my first project I was thinking of tackling The Practice and Theory of Bolshevism by Bertrand Russell, which details his trip to Russia after the revolution and impressions of Lenin and other Soviet leaders. It's about 40k words long and aside from some footnotes has little extra formatting.

Cheers,
Jacob

OK, that one would be a good start.

The book is divided into sections so see the manual for how to style that.

You'll have to remove the "errata" underlines the PG producer added.

Since there is a preface, you will have to add a half title page.

There are only a few endnotes so it shouldn't be too bad to work with
them - see the manual for copy and paste styling.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

Thanks Alex,

I've uploaded my progress so far to GitHub here. For the cover I was thinking of using a cropped version of this photo, which seems suitably industrial given the subject matter. A few questions:

- The chapters in the book are organized into two parts, and I tried to include the chapters under each part, but se lint says that the chapters have "Section with data-parent attribute, but no section having that id in ebook", and I'm not quite sure how to fix it.
- There are a few places where Russell uses "Mohammedanism", which is considered archaic now. Should that be replaced with "Islam"?
- The endnotes have several large quotations that use quotation marks, should those be converted to paragraphs inside a <blockquote>?
- There are a few places where a blockquote is offset by :— (colon and em dash), should those just be a colon?

Thanks,
Jacob

While you’re waiting for a manager…

  1. Your spine is not in the correct order. se build-spine makes an initial guess, but has to be manually corrected if it gets it wrong.
  2. No, we only modernize soundalikes.
  3. You don’t specify which endnote you’re referring to, and you didn’t link to the source (scan), which is what we need to see context. If you’re referring to the long quote in ch. 1-5, then yes, I would make that one a blockquote.
  4. They’re fine as is.

Robin can you manage this with Weijia reviewing?

Thanks for the feedback everyone, the long quote in chapter 1-5 was what I was referring to so I've changed that to a blockquote.

It looks like I wasn't the only one who had searched for "factory" for cover images :) For a substitute image I'm thinking of Barge Haulers on the Volga by Ilya Repin (in the public domain here), cropped to include just the men on the left.

Cheers,
Jacob

Robin will weigh in as the manager, but as the reviewer and someone who's generally interested in this time period, I don't think this would be the best choice. I think it brushes up against the rule against "famous" paintings and it's very recognizable to me as a depiction of pre-revolutionary Russia. I think something more modern like the cover for My Disillusionment in Russia or a chronologically ambiguous cover like The Bolshevik Myth would do well.

Ok, how about this one then, it's a more modern factory. Unfortunately it's a bit tough to find public domain revolutionary paintings, the closest thing I could find was The Bolshevik (it was published in a newspaper here), but it seemed a bit over the top (it's essentially a propaganda piece).

Jacob

The Bolshevik is very striking, and since you found PD proof we should
at the very least add it to the database. However I can't access the
scans because they're behind a paywall. Can you find public scans
somewhere, or email me the scans somehow?

Thanks everyone, I sent the newspaper scans to Alex and he said I can use The Bolshevik for the cover if I want. I think I will, since it was done by a British painter contemporary to Russell and is also the closest thing I could find related to the revolution. So if that's alright then I'll finish up the metadata and let you know when it's ready for review.

Cheers,
Jacob

OK, great work Jacob, thanks! Everything looks good and I've gone ahead
and released it.

If you'd like to work on another book, maybe something more advanced,
check our Wanted Ebooks list for some ideas. You can also pitch
something else that might interest you to the mailing list.

For the cover I was thinking of using a cropped version of this photo <https://www.si.edu/object/madrid-coal-mine-new-mexico:saam_1964.1.166 <https://www.si.edu/object/madrid-coal-mine-new-mexico:saam_1964.1.166> <https://www.si.edu/object/madrid-coal-mine-new-mexico:saam_1964.1.166 <https://www.si.edu/object/madrid-coal-mine-new-mexico:saam_1964.1.166>>>, which seems suitably industrial given the subject matter.
