I would love to contribute by picking up this project if it is still available. It would be my first but I am a quick learner.

The Patchwork Girl of Oz by L. Frank Baum. № 7 in the Oz series.

Great, that one would be a good start.

You can cut all of the illustrations. Unfortunately none are suitable
for a a cover. There's a prologue but it's actually a preface, so I
think you can rename it to "preface" and put it before the half title page.

Otherwise this should be pretty straightforward.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish. Please follow
it exactly:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can assign you a manager and reviewer.

Have fun! :)

Thanks! I'm working on getting everything setup over the weekend, do you want the github now or after I get the base structure setup?

Whenever you're ready. Once we get a link to your repo we can assign you
a manager and reviewer who will help you through the process.

Just an update, I'm setting up my repo and setting up the skeleton, but Project Gutenberg's site is having server issues, apparently.

My github repo will be at https://github.com/zer0trip/The-Patchwork-Girl-of-Oz-by-L.-Frank-Baum but I have not been able to create the skeleton yet.

Hi - you might want to hold off on creating your GitHub repo (while deleting the one you linked) until you can actually use the `se create-draft` command (see the Producing Guide). The repo will have quite a different name to the one you've made up, and it will likely make things easier down the line.

Hope that helps!

If necessary, you can run create-draft without giving it a PG id; that will create the repository correctly, just without the actual text of the book.

But, I just checked, and PG was OK for me. Note there are two transcriptions for the book on PG; an early one from 1997, and a slightly later one from 2010. The later one might be better, but you should take a look at them before you start so you know which one to use. Look for things like how they handle italics and emphasis, what the HTML looks like, etc.

OK, David will manage with Emma reviewing. It's not necessary to rename
your Github repo, but do make sure to use create-draft with the correct
parameters so that the internals start out OK.
