Hello all,

I'd like to read this book, and I'd like it to be as nice as the other philosophy titles I can get from Standard Ebooks, and I think I can contribute to that.

It looks like the Paul Carus translation is already on PG

If there's a different translation that's preferred, or if this title isn't right for the collection please let me know!

Thank you,
Catherine Leonard

Hi Catherine, sure, you could work on that.

I don't have an opinion on the translations. The PG one is from 1912 so
that sounds like it would probably be the latest PD one out there, but
that doesn't necessarily mean it's the best.

For the § markers, those will be sub <section>s of the main chapter. You
can put them as heading material instead of inline with the first paragraph.

There are also some sub-sub-sections like "Remark I" and "Remark II".

I also see one table that you will have to determine how to format.

Also a good number of endnotes.

I think this will land on the very difficult side of a beginner
production. In fact maybe it's better as a second production. But if you
like reading philosophy and you're determined to see this through then
you could do it as your first book.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish. Please follow
it exactly:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can assign you a manager and reviewer.

Have fun! :)

Thanks! I just finished the Manual of Style and found my scans and I've run into my first issue. :)

It seems the PG ebook includes only the preface and the section titled "Kant's Prolegomena" from the original book, this represents just the portion that translates Kant's work. The rest of the original book, about half of of it, consisted of an essay by the translator/editor (seventy pages, roughly a quarter of the book) and supplementary materials "for the Study of Kant's Life and Philosophy" (another forty or so pages) including a transcribed and translated letter from Kant to his brother.

I'm not sure how to link a specific page on archive.org but it starts on pg. 191 here, and this is after the last content in the PG epub

Further complicating the issue, the preface makes reference to the essay and supplementary material that was cut from the PG epub.

I'd still like to pursue this work if at all possible, but I'd appreciate any guidance you have for dealing with this situation.

That's fine, we don't want that supplementary material anyway.

If the preface mentions it, add an endnote explaining the situation

Sounds good, I pulled the initial PG source text and trimmed the header/footer, the repo is here:

OK, Vince will manage with Robin reviewing.
