Do you all happen to know how on the split I would handle the following?
!--se:split--><h2>BOOK I-THE ADVENT</h2>
<h3>CHAPTER I</h3>
<h4>I</h4>
<p>Oliver Brand, the new member for Croydon (4), sat in his study, looking
out of the window over the top of his typewriter.</p>

Seems that if I do that it would split it out and I see that you would want the end result... (based this on Treasure Island)
<section data-parent="book-1" id="chapter-1" epub:type="chapter">
    <hgroup>
        <h3 epub:type="z3998:ordinal z3998:roman">I</h3>
        <p epub:type="title">The Advent</p>
    </hgroup>
        ...
</section>

Just want to make sure my commits are as clean as possible.
Questioned I asked in the previous chat.

Notes from Alex from previous chat...

Great, that one would be a good start.

There's a dedication and preface so you'll have to add a half title page.

The note at the top of the prologue can be formatted as a bridgehead,
see the manual for styling that.

Since the book is divided into "books", chapters will be at the h3
level. Make sure to include the data-parent attribute on chapter
sections, see the manual for how to format that.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish. Please follow
it exactly:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can assign you a manager and reviewer.

Have fun! :)

Unfortunately, split doesn’t handle multi-level books very well, especially if the chapter numbers start over in each level. If they don’t, just split on the book first (i.e. the h2’s), then resplit each of the result files into chapters on the h3’s; you can specify a starting number on everything after the first book to get the files numbered correctly.

Plus, you can redo the split as often as you need to; if one doesn’t work as you intended, just delete the chapter files, re-edit the body, and try again. Nothing is permanent until you commit. It can be rebased even then, but nobody wants that. :)

This might be a dumb question or I am not understanding. I have it split out and of course can set the split to get them taken out. But when I look at https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/robert-louis-stevenson/treasure-island   which is similar setup as "Lord of the World" the split doesn't look the same. Wanted to confirm that there for sure is a manual update process. Focused on Book 1 - The Advent I updated the book code to the following:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <head>
        <title>Book I: The Advent</title>
        <link href="../css/core.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"/>
        <link href="../css/local.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"/>
    </head>
    <body epub:type="bodymatter z3998:fiction">
        <section id="book-1" epub:type="book">
            <hgroup>
                <h2>
                    <span epub:type="se:label">Book</span>
                    <span epub:type="z3998:ordinal z3998:roman">I</span>
                </h2>
                <p epub:type="title">The Advent</p>
            </hgroup>
        </section>
    </body>
</html>

Of course it seems the chapters themselves split out fine. Any tips or anything I am missing?

Thanks!

You’re not viewing the split when you look at Treasure Island, you’re viewing the end result of the entire production process.

Again, all the split does is split the one big file into multiple smaller ones. It makes no other changes. Once the files are split, just follow the remainder of Step by Step guide as close to exact as possible. As you can see there, you don’t need to worry about the formatting for the section headers until late in step 14.

I have all the chapters split out. It is Book 1, Chapters 1 - 5 , and then Book 2, Chapters 1 - 8, etc., so had to adjust them to Chapters 1- 19 and ran SE Clean. Should there be a Book 1, Book 2, and Book 3 section separately or just build those at a later commit? SE Clean ran fine. I added a screenshot of how the tree looks so far. It did also split out the dedication, preface, and prologue separately as well so those are listed for when the time comes to format them.

Apologies up front for the many more questions I am sure I will be asking. :)

If you’re asking if there should be separate book-* files, the answer is yes. See SEMoS 2.2.

Re the chapter numbers, that was the "you can specify a starting number on everything after the first book to get the files numbered correctly” portion of my original email.

Thanks for the info! Looks like they are doing the chapter-{part#}-{chapter#}, should I follow then chapter-{book#}-{chapter#}  as in https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.9.0/single-page#2.2.4.2 ?

I don’t know, should you? What does 2.2.4.1/2 say about when you should and when you shouldn’t?

My apologies, 2.2.4.2/3, not .1/2.

Each chapter does restart at #1, so it would be  chapter-{book#}-{chapter#}. Just needed confirmation is all. Thanks! I will get that corrected and at that point will do the next commit.

If it’s in SEMoS, you don’t need confirmation. Do what it says. :)

I am working on the validating the italics and noticed entree was listed with the é. In the scan it has it correctly. Should I fix that now or note it and fix it as an [Editorial]? Gutenberg has it as entree without the '. Seems to happen several times in the GB text.

Code:
<p>He addressed himself vigorously to his <i>entree</i>, and his mother looked up with a patient, old-woman smile.</p>
            <p>Mabel began to drum her fingers softly on the damask.</p>
            <p>“Please make haste, my dear,” she said; “I have to be at Brighton at three.”</p>

Also, would this fall under Typography - 8.29.9 and be a non-English word that has become naturalized or would I need to note it as a lang="fr" ?

Thanks!

Changes to match the scans are never editorial. Editorial is changing the text from the scans.

A lot of PG transcriptions, especially older ones, are missing diacritics. (E.g., all of the Balzac transcriptions I’m working with for the Human Comedy are missing all the diacritics.) If so, that means you need to proofread side by side with the scans very carefully, or (as I do) make a separate pass through the scans looking for diacritics.

As 8.2.9.4 says, if it’s in M-W, it’s not italicized. 8.2.9.9 are exceptions to that rule.
