Hello,

I'd love to contribute to this project and this would be my first attempt. I see this one on the beginner wanted list that I'd be interested in starting:
I'm not sure yet how best to pick a scan of the book but I see this on the Internet Archive and it seems like a good candidate:
I have some experience with git and am familiar with HTML and CSS. I would plan to set up the tools in WSL on Windows 11.

Please let me know if this would be a good start!

Great, that one would be a good start.

PG is down for me at the moment so I can't see the transcription. But
based on the page scans it should be pretty straightfoward.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

I've just about finished reading the manual, paying special attention to the semantics, high level patterns, and typography sections, and I've worked up through Step 6 in the step-by-step guide.

I've created the repo and made the initial commit. The repo is at https://github.com/mwwagoner/charles-w-chesnutt_the-house-behind-the-cedars.

OK, Robin will manage this with Vince reviewing.

I have a question to make sure I'm on the right track here.

I'm preparing to run the perl command in step 7 of the guide to insert the <!--se:split--> markup and notice that chapter titles are made up of an ordinal and a title. They're also using <h3> rather than <h2> tags in the source document.

Here's an example:

<div class="pg_body_wrapper"><br/></div><div class="pg_body_wrapper"><br/></div><div class="pg_body_wrapper"><br/></div>

<div class="pg_body_wrapper"><a id="chap02"/></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;" class="xhtml_h3_align">
II
</h3>

<h3 style="text-align: center;" class="xhtml_h3_align">
AN EVENING VISIT
</h3>

According to 7.2.6 in the manual the ordinal and the title will end up together in an <hgroup> element and will need to be changed to <h2> tags.

I'd like to clean up the superfluous <div> tags and attributes, and change the <h3> tags to <h2>. I'll also need to tweak the perl search and replace command a bit to only put the <!--se:split--> markup on the ordinals and not both the ordinals and the titles.

You did mention to email often so I thought I'd check that I'm going about this correctly, or is there a better standard way to handle this scenario?

You might be able to craft a quick find and replace to look for a closing div followed by the opening h3, and replace it with an h2? That would fix the ordinals and leave the titles for later, and would mean you could then use the Perl regex as is. Cleaning the divs up at this point isn’t a problem though.

It might not be the most correct way, but I usually just convert the <h3> to <h2> at this stage and use the perl script, and clean the unused code later.

Thank you Robin and Hendrik. I'll replace the <h2>s as you suggest and that should get me back on track.

I have a question about the right semantic option to choose for an abbreviation.

There's a character throughout the book referred to as Mary B. I assumed the 'B.' was a surname however later in the book there's this passage:

“I heared you say, Cousin Molly,” said Mary B. (no one ever knew what the B. in Mary’s name stood for—it was a mere ornamental flourish)

I'm wondering since it's an "ornamental flourish" would it be better to use the personal-name (e.g.  <abbr epub:type="z3998:personal-name"> ) catchall instead of surname?
