I’d like to pitch another Haycraft Queen Cornerstones book.  Not sure about which author name to go with.

I think there are a few illustrations so I will have to learn how to do that.

OK, sure. You can use the name Metta Victor since it looks like she
wrote under many pen names. Cut the illustrations, they are just
decorative. Send a link to your repo once you start!

This book has a subtitle, how do we deal with those?  Looks like it would only show up in the halftitlepage?

OK, Weijia will manage with Emma reviewing.

Since Weijia is away I'll handle things for now.

Subtitles only appear in the book text if there's a half title. If not
then they don't appear. However, they always are included in the
metadata, see the manual for how to structure subtitles in metadata.

I believe this book was published in the US first, so the language should be en-US instead of en-GB, right?

Where it was published is irrelevant, the spelling in the text drives the language. Create draft assigns the language based on looking for a few British spellings in the text, e.g. colour, honour. If the spellings are predominantly British, then the language is en-GB; if not, it’s en-US.

Thanks, Vince.  I didn't know create-draft did that.  So the instructions in the step-by-step guide (step 8) is more of a check, then?

Thanks,
Igor

Yes. It was written before create-draft did its check, but occasionally a manual update is still needed. Sometimes books have a mixture of spellings, e.g. both color and colour, and which one is predominate is chosen for the language. Even so, the Step by Step refers to the spelling in the text, not the location of the publisher, so it still points to the text, not the location of the publisher.

Thanks, Vince, got it.

Alex or Weijia, I've got a comma in between two quotation marks that I believe is correctly placed, or should it go inside both of them?
“Don’t ‘slay me with a look’,” he said, laughing quietly.

Best,
Igor

I believe Wejia is still unavailable for a bit.

Commas and periods go inside all quotes in US English; it should be
“Don’t ’slay me with a look,’” he said, laughing quietly.
Typogrify will put a hairspace between the two closing quotes so they’re easier to see.

Thanks, Vince.

This transcription also has a lot of "class" elements in the ,p. code.  Those should all go, right? See below for example.
<p class="c010">We now lighted our lamp, and, finding a light cane sofa in the hall, nearly opposite the locked door, we took seats, and kept ourselves awake by talking. The storm had subsided into the monotonous patter of a steady rain.</p>
                        <p class="c011">“I am surprised,” said <abbr epub:type="z3998:name-title">Mr.</abbr> Burton

And there also a baby that says "“An-nee<2060>—an-nee,” should those be non-breaking hyphens?

Thanks!

Thanks.  A couple of questions about xml:lang elements. Are the following required?
- la for vice versa
- la for sotto voce
- fr for "dénoûement"
- fr for "mêlée"
- es for peons

Thanks, guys.  That is actually fairly obvious.

I do have a question about the denouement case: The word appears twice in the transcription, both times italiziced; once as dénoûement and once as dénouement.  The second can be found in M-W and thus does not need to be italicized (and may even be better off without the accent mark, but I guess that would be an Editorial change?).  The first does not appear in M-W as written, although I'm not sure it was transcribed correctly (see page scan clip below):
image.png
Should I normalize them both to one of the versions in M-W, denouement or dénouement?  And if so, is that an Editorial change?

On a related note, there's an instance of the word hocus-pocus appearing in quotes and italicized.  Since that is not a foreign word, it does not need to be italicized?  I don't think it's special emphasis, the sentence is as follows:
I could hardly credit my own senses; there must be some “<i>hocus-pocus</i>” about it, as in the tricks which jugglers play with cards.

When it comes to italicization, it’s best to start from the place that what the source scans do is immaterial—it’s what SEMoS says that matters. There are a (very) few exceptions to that, but they are very few. As you note, if it’s not emphasis (and I agree it doesn’t appear to be), there’s no reason for hocus-pocus to be italicized, ergo (per SEMoS) it shouldn’t be.

Re denouement, if the one with the single diacritic were the only one, then I would personally leave it; even though it’s less common, it is in M-W. However, in this case, where you’re going to have to touch them anyway to standardize them, I would normalize them both to have no diacritics, since that’s the more common spelling. And since it is changing text, then yes, it’s editorial.

You can normalize them to no italics or accent marks. You can also
remove quotes and italics from hocus-pocus. Both should be editorial.

Thanks, all.

In this book a lot of times are written with commas after the time before A.M. or P.M. I believe we just style those with spaces and no commas?  If so, is removing the commas an editorial change?  Or should I just keep it?

E.g. "which we reached about two, A. M. and were at Mr. Burton’s house, ringing up the surprised servants, shortly after."

I'm having some trouble getting the break between stanzas of a poem/verse to look correct, as below:
image.png
I don't have <br\> line after the end of the first stanza, and I'm starting a new <p> element but there's no break between them.

Thanks for any help, and happy new year!

Thanks, I did add the following to local.css.  I thought it would be enough, but maybe I am missing something?  Is there a central location where I can get the common CSS styles?  Or maybe it's just a matter of the xhtml files not being displayed properly (I haven't built the epub yet).

[epub|type~="z3998:poem"] p{
        text-align: initial;
        text-indent: 0;
}

Well, look at the selectors you pasted in.
[epub|type~="z3998:poem"] p + p will give your stanzas a top margin...
IF you used the z3998:poem semantic. Did you use that semantic, or a
different one? You must tailor the CSS to fit your actual ebook.

Thanks, Alex.  I got it working now.  I had to update the selector to epub|type~="z3998:verse" because that's what I had.

To unsubscribe from this group and all its topics, send an email to standardebook...@googlegroups.com.

Another question about a letter (the all-important dead letter of the title):

Is there any way to format it more closely to how it appears in the scans?  Or is this good enough?

Also, does "Negotiator" get both "sender" and "signature" semantic inflection?  It's not a name after all.

Best,
Igor
