For my next project I was thinking of doing Oil!, by Upton Sinclair. As of this year it's in the public domain.

I anticipate it being quite difficult to find a suitable cover image, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

One question; each chapter is split into sections with roman numeral headings. King Coal had a similar layout but no chapters, so those became chapters. In Oil! they seem roughly equivalent to <hr> tags in other SE books. What should I do with them?

They are what you called them—sections. :) They are subchapters, so each will need its own section and h#. There are lots of examples in the corpus, just search for subchapter.

OK, sure. There's a fair amount of artwork on industrial subjects like
coal mining and manufacturing. That might be close enough for something
like this.

Please send a link to your repo once you get started. Thanks!

Quick update on this; currently in the middle of the full proof read.

In the meantime, here's one possibility for a cover: https://www.si.edu/object/burning-oil-well-night-near-rouseville-pennsylvania:saam_1977.50. It's CC0 at the Smithsonian so I think it should be OK to use. There is a scene in the book involving an oil well catching fire, so it's reasonably appropriate.

Here's one possibility of how it could look as a cover:

I think it's a possibility but the detail is blocked by the title box.
Without seeing the actual well or person it looks like a volcano or
something. Can you try cropping it so we can see more of the lower detail?

Hmmm. Here's a closer crop to make some of the foreground characters more visible. There's still not an awful lot of detail to show exactly what it is though - although maybe the title gives some context.

All right, Alex, I believe this is ready for you.

Notes:
  • Semanticate wants to put an “eoc” on an abbreviation in a headline, but since it’s a headline and not a sentence, it wasn’t accepted.
  • Modernize spelling wants to change Cañon to Canyon, but it’s on a Spanish sign, which would use the tilde, so it wasn’t accepted, either.
  • There is a ship and two boats.
  • There is a CSS class for headlines because there are over a dozen of them across five chapters and listing them individually using nth-of-type would be unwieldy.

Great work Job!

As I look this over I see that Sinclair uses a lot of scare quotes for
words that are now common.

For example:

> The price of “gas” of course began to mount immediately.

> hand you a little slip with the amount of your “bail” noted on it,

> He liked to “josh” the waitress;

> and it was so difficult to keep the “soreheads” quiet!

> here he was with a desire to “root” for the enemies of his country

> Behind the “filling station” was a little cabinet

We should remove scare quotes like this in an editorial commit because
they look out of place to today's reader. I found these using this
regex: “[a-z ]+” However not all of the matches should have quotes
removed, it's a matter of context.

Unfortunately there are quite a lot of matches so this may take some
time to go through and make sure we don't remove scare quotes that
belong for prosodic effect.

Alright, I've had a go at this and updated the repo. The regex I ended up using is `“([a-z -]+[\.,]?)”`. I found it quite difficult to identify a definite line, but I've tried to be as consistent as possible. I've left in pretty much anything related to industry (e.g. oil, real estate, film-making) unless it is fairly ubiquitous and unambiguous today.
