I've been reading Bulldog Drummond, and would be up for generating some more books in the series. So I'd like to next produce The Black Gang, the second book in the Bulldog Drummond series.

PG doesn't seem to have a transcription, but there's one at https://www.fadedpage.com/showbook.php?pid=20160528 .

OK?

It's also on Australia's Project Gutenberg at https://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks08/0800501h.html

Sure, send a link to your repo once you start.

I’m guessing the answer to this is going to be “leave it as is”, but I wanted to ask about a pattern that pops up a few times in the text, where a sentence has a parenthetical thought within it that ends in a question mark. Here’s an example…

Either the entire thing was a hoax, in which case, why had McIver himself taken such elaborate precautions to prevent anything happening? or it was not a hoax, in which case McIver had been made a complete fool of.”

That question mark in the middle of the sentence seems just wrong to me. What if I inserted em dashes, like this…

Either the entire thing was a hoax – in which case, why had McIver himself taken such elaborate precautions to prevent anything happening? – or it was not a hoax, in which case McIver had been made a complete fool of.

As expected, we do nothing in this case, same as with mid-thought interjections with exclamation marks. It’s typical style for 100+ year literature.
