I'm trying to unpack the CmdStan archive.  I'm attaching what I see in the archive.  It seems to be missing the make and stan files.  Is there something I'm not seeing?

That looks complete. If there's nothing in the stan_2.14.0 folder, then it's incomplete.

The example models are in a different repository: https://github.com/stan-dev/example-models.

Ok.  Thank you.  I'm trying to search down the missing make file.  I see make.h  here:

U:\Stan\cmdstan-2.14.0\stan_2.14.0\lib\stan_math_2.14.0\lib\boost_1.62.0\boost\predef

Is this the make file that I need to run?

There's a makefile in the top level of cmdstan itself, so that
should just be the cmdstan-2.14.0 directory. See here:

https://github.com/stan-dev/cmdstan

and specifically here:

https://github.com/stan-dev/cmdstan/blob/develop/makefile

Hi Scott,

I think there's some misunderstanding.

If you've followed the instructions and have installed the C++ toolchain that we suggested (RTools), then you're ready to go from Stan programs to machine executable code.

You'll need to supply a Stan program to make it work, though. That's why I tried to point you to the example-models repo. Stan is a language, so you can write whatever model you're interested in. It's not like other toolkits where you build it and toss data at it.

If you have specific questions about how to get started or if you're still confused, please let us know where in the directions you're lost.

Yes, I think so.  I'm trying to run from Stata.  The github page for StatStan says to first download CmdStan which I've done. The documentation for CmdStan says there should be a file, make, which is not present when I unzip the archive.  I see in the appendix where I need to download Rtools.  I just can't get past this first step.

There is a file named simply "makefile" right at the top level of
the CmdStan distribution. There's also a directory called "make".
If you don't have those, you don't have the right distribution.

You want the downloads from here:

https://github.com/stan-dev/cmdstan/releases

such as:

https://github.com/stan-dev/cmdstan/releases/download/v2.14.0/cmdstan-2.14.0.zip

I just verified those files are present and accounted for.

Installed from the URL that you suggested and I have all of the items shown on p. 8 of the cmdstan guide.  Everything is in C:\cmdstan-2.14.0\cmdstan-2.14.0 on my computer.  When I change to this directory and run "make build -j4" as specified section 3 of p. 8 of the cmdstan guide, I get a message that it's an invalid command.  Section 2.1 says I need the make utility.  Seems like I'm missing this piece.  I tried "makefile build -j4" with the same result.

Have you installed RTools? See the installation instructions in the CmdStan manual in Appendix B.2.
(Sorry it's buried inside a pdf.)

You'll need that to build CmdStan properly. I think there was some confusion with your first question because it seemed like you were asking a different question and not an installation question.
