I am trying to build an R package with stan vignettes on TravisCI. See https://github.com/dmenne/bugsexamples and https://github.com/dmenne/rstanyaml for a minimal example version; and https://travis-ci.org/dmenne/rstanyaml/builds/75600644 for the TravisCI log.

Both versions run on the desktop, but crash with the following compiler error when run in TravisCI:

lang__grammars__statement_2_grammar_inst.o
g++ -I/usr/share/R/include -DNDEBUG -I"../inst/include" -I"../inst/include/boost_not_in_BH"
....
-Werror=format-security -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -g  -c lang__grammars__statement_grammar_inst.cpp -o lang__grammars__statement_grammar_inst.o

g++: internal compiler error: Killed (program cc1plus)

This has been reported to be caused by an out of memory situation.

Looks like free TravisCI cannot be used to build packages running rstan in tests or vignettes.

Use CXX = clang++ as the compiler. See our .travis.yml file

Clang could fail too, so often Travis-ci is not helpful.

  • @Ben: I have tried to use your developer .yml, but my changes to compile a package USING rstan were not succesful. I had to add sudo (error message told me), and by using it, travis implicitly switches to non-container based legacy mode, which has less memory (1.5 instead of 2).
  • I do not have the time to correct this (and I am not good in makefiles), so in case someone has a .yml for a package using Clang, please tell me.
  • @Jiqiang: I was surprised that the out-of-memory with the same project (only readme change to trigger build) sometimes worked (1 out of 3).
