There seems to be a permissions problem at the rstan googlecode repository.

When I try to install rstan with

options
(repos = c(getOption("repos"), rstan = "http://wiki.rstan-repo.googlecode.com/git/"))
install
.packages('rstan', lib=.libPaths()[2], type = 'source')

I get an error message

Error in download.file(url, destfile, method, mode = "wb", ...) : cannot open URL 'http://wiki.rstan-repo.googlecode.com/git/src/contrib/rstan_2.2.0.tar.gz'

If I navigate manually to the URL http://wiki.rstan-repo.googlecode.com/git/src/contrib/ in my browser, I can see the directory listing,

Revision 318c931b4715: /src/contrib

[Project Page]

If I click on PACKAGES or PACKAGES.gz, I can download them, but if I click on any of rstan_*.tar.gz, I get a 403 error.

We seem to be getting more of these reports.
I can't reproduce the issue --- it downloads fine for me (and
no, I'm not logged into Google or anything).

I think we need to find a better hosting solution.

My colleague is having the same problem - he gets a 403 error when trying to access the file . Has the rstan team been able to identify any solutions?

The exact message when accessing the googlecode site online is: "403: Your client does not have permission to get URL \git\src\contrib\rstan_2.3.0.tar.gz from this server. That's all we know".

Thanks for your help,
Calvin

I have this problem as well.  I am working on moving to a new hosting.

I was able to use git to clone the repository to my local disk and then install from the local file:

git clone http://code.google.com/p/rstan-repo.wiki/  ~/rstan.git

And then from inside R:

install.packages(path.expand('~/rstan.git/src/contrib/rstan_2.2.0.tar.gz'), repos=NULL, type='source')
