I see examples for CmdStan usage that take a file with a .R extension as the data input. As a non-R user, I suspect this is a format that means something in the R community, but searches for the file format specifications haven't yielded any useful results.

Could someone point me to some documentation with specifications for this file format? (I'm assuming/hoping it's not a binary)

Thanks
Chris

See the CmdStan manual chapter on data input format for
a full definition with examples.

It's an ASCII format (downsides: slow to decode, bloated;
upsides: easy to produce, portable).

The .R extension is just what R uses for R code and
the data input format we use is a subset of R code.

The rstan_dump function in RStan will produce the appropriate
output if it's easier to start by getting the data into R.
