Quick question: does anyone have an example of the the new cbind function in use? I haven't been able to find it documented in the new manual.

I don't know what happened. I thought we'd merged
the cbind and rbind operations, but apparently we
haven't --- they're not only not documented, the don't
exist. I'll try to track down what went wrong and
make sure they're in the next release.

Sorry for the confusion --- what happened is that the functions
were renamed to append_col() and append_row() in an effort to
make Stan programs easier to read for non-R experts. (And thanks
for setting me straight, Marco.)

Perhaps could be useful to put cbind and rbind in index with a pointer to append_col and append_row, so that R users can find them if they’re looking?

Good idea --- I'll do that for the next release. It would've
helped me find them and I was involved in the renaming!

Hmmm. I wonder if the majority of Stan users aren't R users : the nature of the tool let me think that a good chunk (majority ?) of Stan *users* use it through rstan. For them, rbind() and cbind() would come "naturally" at their fingertips...

Do some data exist about the popularity of the curent interfaces ? One can guesstimate their respective audiences by looking at download logs...

I am an R user and use Stan via rstan, but I prefer append_col and
append_row in Stan.

IMO many function names in R are accidental and occasionally not well
chosen (in particular, I very much resent the allocation c and t as
function names, which makes their use as single-letter local variables
bad style, if not exactly invalid). Also, while I am an "R user", I am a
C user, Julia user, and Lisp user too. So I don't see why Stan should
make an effort to follow any traditions of R when they are not the
optimal choice per se.

Best,

Tamas

I just dug a bit deeper in finding stats, but Git
doesn't give you stats on the pre-packaged downloads
we're using now.

Here's a nice app I found linked from stackoverflow for
printing out what they will show you about downloads:

http://somsubhra.github.io/github-release-stats/

But mostly you can see how much the various manuals have
been downloaded.

Our thinking exactly.

We should probably put more of our naming out to our
users group for feedback before locking it in. Some
things we obsess over on the dev list and wind up renaming
before release (like we changed "raise_exception" to "reject"
figuring it was more natural in the statistical setting, and
we changed solve_ode to integrate_ode to be more precise; I
was on the fence on both of those decisions).
