This came up on the users list with a user wanting to evaluate
samples from other packages vs. Stan. As is, there is
no input format definition for bin/print for command-line Stan
or read_stan_csv for RStan.

I'd think this would be worth doing if it's not that hard.
Otherwise, we can point users to Coda or something.

Also, would it be possible to get one more digit of printing
in RStan? I know Andrew likes minimal, but I almost always want
at least 2 digits.

P.S. Recent develop branch doesn't have improvements to bin/print
in the doc --- if they're there somewhere else, I just haven't
seen them. The current develop manual mentions the digits problem,
but I thought that had been fixed.

The format is really specified in stan_csv_reader, not bin/print. In any case the format is pretty tightly bound to the expected Stan output, although with some work it could be made more robust. In particular, it should be able to be made backward compatible to v1.3.0. You can add an issue and assign me to it -- I'm just not sure when I'll have a chance to work on it.

The print() function has a digits argument, i.e.

print(fit, digits = 2)

and the print() function is what is ultimately being called when you just type

fit

You can circumvent the Andrew behavior by typing

setMethod("show", "stanfit", def = function(object) print(object, digits = 2))

which will persist for that R session.
