how to get the version number of CmdStan

I want to check the version number of the user's CmdStan from inside StataStan (to handle print vs stansummary, but probably other stuff too in due course). I could get this from the name of the stan_* folder, but that means echoing ls / dir to a text file, etc etc etc... maybe there's a quick way to do it... any ideas?

goodrich@T540p:/opt/cmdstan/bin$ ./stanc --version
stanc version 2.9.0

It's still a string though.
