I get similar failure on an updated RHEL 6 distribution
kernel version 2.6.32-279.11.1.el6.x86_64
g++ version 4.4.6 20120305 (Red Hat 4.4.6-4)
stan version 1.02
The MetaTraits.VectorView_matrix_var failure is follwed by a segmentation
fault:
[ RUN ] MetaTraits.VectorView_matrix_var
make: *** [runtest/test/meta/traits] Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Several of the model tests fail:

stan version 1.03 gives the same unit test failures on my setup.

I confirm also that I still see the issue with MetaTrait test failures in
1.03. Unlike the previous commentator, I am not seeing a segmentation
fault or core dump.

My system is fairly new and so I am interested in whether this issue is
just some sort of system configuration / environment problem on my machine
or is an issue with STAN. If there is any additional information or
testing I can provide, I would certainly like to help out.

These test failures seem to happen on many recent Linux distributions, but
not Mac or Windows. When they fail, they fail on both g++ and clang++, so
it is likely an issue of how the underlying C++ library works on Linux.
