We were trying to do the current release and I got
bit by having some .o files lying around that hugely
inflated the size. We tracked them down by divide
and conquer on the files.
I wasn't seeing them on "git status" because there
was a general .gitignore for .o files.
Is there a way to see things in the directory that
aren't in version control?

Daniel figured it out:
> git clean -n -x
And then to get rid of them
> git clean -f -x
I thought it'd be a bit extreme to do that automatically
on our dist target.

That is probably a bit extreme for a dist target. But to answer your original question, see
