When we pull the autodiff/math code out into a separate repo we need
to give it a name. I called the second-generation code “Nomad” to play
on the “AD” but we need not be as playful here. Anybody have any
strong opinions? I can offer

SADLib (Stan Automatic Differentiation Library — logo is just the sad emoticon :-( )
StanAD
StanADE (Automatic Differentiation Engine)

Sam (Stan autodiff/math)
or
Sam is not an acronym, Sam is Stan's son
and
this would also follow the tradition that the name gets a lot of search results even before the first release!

As much as I like Aki's suggestion, I like simple, as in:

StanMath

though camel case has perhaps seen better days, so
maybe

The Stan Math Library

In particular, I would rather reinforce than split the
Stan brand. I find the Sacado (autodiff) as part of
Trilinos (larger math lib) thing really confusing.

If Andrew insists on throwing SEO and branding to the
wind, and we have to go with a name, we could use "Mike"
in the spirit of "Stan" --- it was the code name of
the first hydrogen bomb test and also a riff on Michael :-)
Or Edward after Teller if we want to full nuclear, or maybe
Nicholas after Metropolis (though it's the piece w/o
Metropolis!)

Now that Betancourt's in London, maybe he can nip down to
the East End for some help with some Cockney rhyming slang,
which is easiest to explain with an example:

Water Closet -> Waterloo -> loo

From Wikipedia:

One example is replacing the word "stairs" with the rhyming
phrase "apples and pears". Following the pattern of omission,
"and pears" is dropped, thus the spoken phrase "I'm going up the
apples" means "I'm going up the stairs".

Next time we’re all in a room together we need to come up
with some awesome statistics rhyming slang over drinks.

We can get totally Ripley’d.

I'm a fan of StanADE. Fun to say, and the connection to Stan is apparent from the name.

Also, it gets you a slogan for free:

"Auto-diff, drink the StanADE."

Since we're lobbying, I'm not a big fan of forced acronyms,
sampling through adaptive neighborhoods aside, of course.
I love that one.

I'm also not a big fan of "engine" or "toolbox" or "box"
or "works" or anything else industrial age.

By comparison, both Boost and Eigen refer to themselves
as "libraries". First thing on their home pages:

"boost C++ libraries"

"Eigen is a C++ template library..."

I like the quaintness and directness of "library". No idea
why Boost lowercased "boost" on their web header, since it's capitalized
everywhere else in their doc and all-caps on their red download button.

I also don't want to call it an "engine" or "toolbox" or "box."

Did you want to just call it "library"? As in stan-dev/library? I'm perfectly fine with that.

Or how's "math"? stan-dev/math?
