I've posted the first set of instructions here:
https://github.com/stan-dev/cmdstan/wiki/Getting-Started-with-CmdStan

Please feel free to edit or comment where it's not clear or is inaccurate.

Anyone that used Stan as CmdStan, you should go and clone CmdStan. Stan is now going to be a submodule and although it's a little tricky, it's not really that bad.

The nice thing is that you can go and use the Stan submodule like you would the current repository. That means you can branch, commit, and push from the Stan submodule and it'll have the same effect as if it were the actual repository.

The model targets are the same as before:
- make build: will build bin/print and bin/stanc
- make bin/print or make bin/stanc: that will build the binaries independently
- make foo/bar: that will build the Stan model in foo/bar.stan. It will leave foo/bar.cpp as an artifact.
- make foo/bar.cpp: that will generate the C++, but not compile it.

One thing I forgot to mention: stanc is inside Stan.

The compiler / generator is part of the core Stan library.

What do we do with our old local Stan repository? Do we still push to the old remote Stan repository or do we push into the submodule of CmdStan?

Both will accomplish the same thing.

If anyone has old Stan branches with a lot of conflicts due to the refactoring, let me know and I'll help with the merge.

Awesome!

We need to break the following chapters out of the Stan manual and
put them into a CmdStan manual:

1--6, Appendix A--B

And of course update our web pages to reflect this.

Let me know if you want help doing that.

Yeah, I'll gladly take the help.

I'll put up a branch in CmdStan for the manual.
