Does anyone's setup object to the attached patch, which just adds

CFLAGS_GTEST = -DGTEST_USE_OWN_TR1_TUPLE

to the toplevel makefile? That should be okay unless gtest is somehow weirdly different across platforms. For some configurations, I need that to be set, but it would be simpler and more consistent to do it everywhere.

Can you create a pull request? Once it's on a branch, I can test it on the Mac. We can let Jenkins test it on Windows. 

If it fails, we'll just close it out. 

I don't see any fundamental reason it would fail, but the only way to verify these things is to try.
