I never wanted to do the grunge thing. I always wanted to do the kinderwhore\baby doll dress thing that was like grunge's female cousin. My mom never let me though because every time I'd try a dress on she's say my butt raised it up too high.
I remember the style from watching Edward Scissorhands, Smash Test Dummies & Alanis vids from the mid 90s (also vaguely remember Johnny Depp's incredibly long top hat from Benny & Joon).. and thinking how curious & 'interesting' the sub-culture seemed.
It had a major impact on the way I was socialised in my teens - I didn't necessarily dress to conform to a kind of grunge style, though I remember thinking how cool it was. It definitely left me with a lot to think about/ponder over the years, especially wrt why the wearers carried themselves that way, why they were worrisome & seemingly loaded with the weight of the world on their shoulders etc. etc. And I'm South African! --> Goes to show how sub-cultures can permeate any part of the world.

Grunge style is so awesome! I'm sad that I missed out on it. I really wish I had been older in the early/mid nineties ( I was born in 1993). The clothes that the characters wear on the show My So Called-Life are really cool.
I was there...still am. Nirvana was/is soooo overrated. Their album bleach was good..in utero..meh. Silverchair,Mudhoney,anything with Chris Cornell, Soul Asylum, Ugly Kid Joe, Green Jello..good times

I was part of the "original", Generation X, mainstream movement. Went to high school in the late 80's/ early 90's and lived in Seattle. It couldn't have been any better! My friends and I were literally in the midst of the Seattle Sound movement and it was more than amazing! I wish that the younger generations could experience it, as it was. It's just not even close to being the same now. At the age of 41, I still have quite a bit of my grunge "attitude" and sometimes I still incorporate a few grunge clothing elements into my casual wardrobe.
No joke! In 1991, at the start of the school year, I was the most unpopular kid in school. I was the dirty poor kid. After Christmas break, I immediately became the most popular kid in school and I had no idea why. Thank you Kurt Cobain.
