Whatan INCREDIBLY INEFFICENT way to organize ePubs. Itunes would automatically organize my whole library of hundreds of books, and they would all just show up so I could check mark the books I wanted on my iPad. It appears that now I have to copy each individual ePub to my iCloud drive, and then import each individual file from the files app on my iPad Air to Books. I have hundreds of books. I guess I can choose just a few, but MANY are reference books that I need to have on hand. Am I missing something? Is there an easier way to do this? I use Calibre to organize my ePubs, but I can't get it to talk to my iPad. It means that each book is in it's own folder. So I'm going to have to open every folder and dig out the ePub. Remember when we bought Apple computers even though they're much more expensive, because they made life easier. What the **** happened? Help?
If you want to synchronise from your computer to your iPad you will now use Finder, which has inherited this task from iTunes. As you note, iTunes been retired (except on Windows computers). See Sync books between your Mac and iPhone or iPad.
Thanks. I had no idea that Finder is the new iTunes! However, my iPad does not seem to find the ePub files on my Mac which I have in Documents/eBooks. How do I navigate to that folder to select the books I want to sync?
There is another way to sync I was unaware of earlier - I don't use the Books app and have only recently discovered how it can work with iCloud. It does, however, mean duplicating your Calibre collection because Books and Calibre can't service the same devices; Books requires iOS and Calibre non-Apple devices such as a Kindle - for which it works well I have to say.
However, if you go to your ePubs and import those you have selected into your Mac's Books app (ie. drag and drop) it will synchronise with iCloud and this then will send the ePubs to the Books app on your iPad.
I created a few ePub books using Calibre and I read them on my iphone and ipad. No issues. I have synched them with icloud and I can download the into my iOS devices with no issues. I would like to know where the ePubs are store in icloud? When i log on to
icloud.com using my Windows 11 PC, I dont see a Books folder.
I know I can synch the books with my PC using iTunes. By the way, currently, when I synch my iPad with iTunes on my Windows 11 PC, the Book folder on my PC still shows no books. I have 20+ books on my iPad. i.e. Synch doesnt seem to do deal with Books.
It says the book was downloaded to the iPad which is true. I downloaded the ePub file from Dropbox and exported it to the Books app. I deleted the book on my iPad and I could re-download it from somewhere (I believe icloud as I dont have the book in dropbox anymore) including my markups. When it gives me an option "delete everywhere" I am curious to know where "everywhere" is/are.
I've uploaded many non-Apple epub books to Books. When I drag and drop them from Books to my computer, other programs (like Calibre) cannot read them. Are they stuck with some DRM or such? All the instructions that I've seen say you should be able to export them by drag and drop.
So, Apple may tell you that just drag-and-drop exports the file, the truth is that it cannot be read by other programs. Yet another way Apple locks you into their ecosystem. They just don't play well with others.
Don't get me wrong - I'm an Apple guy through and through... got more Apple devices than I have toes, but every once in a while I need a bit of flexibility. This problem keeps me from sharing MY files with non-Apple users.
What is the exact error message that you receive, if any? Were these ePub books previously stored in the iCloud Files app? If so, the format of the ePub books should remain. Please use the Files apps to determine if the format to the ePub books has changed.
Thanks for the response. Maybe a better explanation of how to export books would help; I found several answers that say to just drag-and-drop to my Downloads folder and then import to other programs normally. Calibre opens if I say File, Open With from my directory, but does not read the file - just does nothing. If, within Calibre I try to import the epub, it pops up with a "Failed to open", then shows my directory and the file name as the name of the imported file. Trying to open that link just says its not there. Most of the error message says:
I didn't quite catch you. Did you get able to export the epub from apple book? As the instruction, copy the epub file for your book folder and change the file type to zip, then drag to the epub zip-unzip 64(Macos), it will generate a new epub file which you can open either in calibre or open ebook app. it works for me now.
Thanks for the follow-up info. We'd like to suggest booting the computer in safe mode, as this will isolate any problems that might be caused by specifics apps or software. Follow the guidance provided in the Apple Support article: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
Sorry to say, I have not cured the problem yet. I've tried re-booting, Safe mode, changing type of file, turning off accessories, and nothing seems to make a difference. I off-loaded quite a few books recently, now I have to go back and verify if they even work.
Calibre strokes out when it tries to import the Books epubs because they are no longer epubs, but zipped Books files. If you right-click on the epub it shows meta contents. That's why I can Export a file, then import it again to Books with no problem. Just a no-go with Calibre.
My library has an option to download "OFFLINE". Do you you see that after you borrow from your library book? The three options I have are READ (which I believe is read online via library website) RETURN (which means just that. Reutrn back). And directly under that is a line which reads DOWNLOAD FOR OFFLINE READING. (meaning you don't have to be connected to wifi)
Then I believe there may be two ways of retrieving it. Like first participant said above.. if you find the file on you pc where it downloaded you click it and a pop up should ask how to open. I click on ADE. It pulled it right into ADE. Then, there is a way to open ADE and click on File and then click on ADD to LIBRARY and then you'll have to navigae to your pc DOWNLOAD files and select the book. That should work too. (BTW . I am using Win 10. Not sure if you are though). I hope this was helpful and you can get back to reading books.
Contemporary romance is a subgenre of romance novels, generally set contemporaneously with the time of its writing. Most contemporary romance novels contain elements that date the books, and the majority of them eventually become irrelevant to more modern readers and go out of print.
I have my iPad now with iOS 5.1. In the email I have a .epub but when iPad's email program download the file, there is no way to open it on iBooks? Tapping or double tapping on the attachment downloaded will have no reaction. Can this be solved if I don't have a PC to place that file into Dropbox to open in iBooks?
Other apps like Evernote and AirSharing also are able to receive my epub files, so if you are not able to do this, perhaps it's an encoding issue or something about how the files are being attached to the emails and not necessarily a problem with iOS.
My Kobo Aura HD H2O is "in the mail" so I'm trying to prepare for it by adding existing non-DRM ePub books that I already own. Ideally I'd like to be able to add books to the Kobo Desktop App and have the device sync via WiFi when it arrives.
(And please please don't say that only books purchased via the Kobo store can be added and that I have to copy them onto the device directly and not have any sync capability... The reason I'm switching to Kobo from Kindle is to rid myself of the hassle of having islands of content!)
Please note that if you simply need to transfer .epub files to the reader, you can simply connect it to your computer with an USB cable, it will be treated like an external USB storage drive; you can simply copy your books on the reader (maybe on a new sub-directory to keep things clean and neat) and when you disconnect it, it will update the database and recognize your new books. There isn't anything easier than this ;-)
Anyway for a more complete management, I suggest you to try Calibre, it is a superb ebook manager itself with a ton of features; also, it is free and opensource and it is available for Linux systems too, if these are things that are relevant for you.
One of its strengths is the opportunity to add plugins to extend its functionalities. It works perfectly with any ereader device, without the need to add anything, but I suggest to you a couple of plugins that are specifically aimed at Kobo users, that can be useful to have:
Please note that you don't have to download these plugins from the MobileRead forum, the easiest way is to install them directly from inside Calibre, where this task can be performed from a nice and handy graphical interface.
