Description
The AIX Administrator will be responsible for installing, configuring
and maintaining hardware, operating systems and software products in
support of 24 X 7 business processes. This individual will implement and
maintain operating system software builds and product solutions for
optimum performance, stability, reliability, security, etc. This
function includes: administration and configuration activities, system
monitoring and reporting, system backups, work on after hours
maintenance rotation, performance monitoring and tuning, and daily
operational support.
Responsibilities
* Perform operational support tasks, assist with installs, builds,
configuring system hardware; trouble-shooting, maintaining, upgrades.
* Create scripts for task automation, build support, scheduling,
file clean-up etc.
* Perform technical troubleshooting and data analysis to determine
root causes of hardware and software problems. Define and implement
problem resolution.
* Conduct routine hardware and software audits of servers for
compliance with established standards, policies, configuration
guidelines and procedures. Develop and maintain a comprehensive hardware
and software configuration database/library of all supporting
documentation.
* Create/refine scripts for High Availability Cluster
MultiProcessing (HACMP) application failover/fallback.
* Maintain and use NIM master for installs and upgrades. Plan and
implement service updates.
* Ensure the accuracy and integrity of all jobs and changes
through proper testing.
* Evaluate new AIX server and disk technologies and tools to
remain current with industry trends and practices and make
recommendations for their application within the enterprise.
* Perform logical and physical changes to the production
environment, including partitioning. Help design logical and physical
AIX architecture.
* Document system landscape and administrative procedures.
* Work with management to define the appropriate standards,
policies, procedures, software toolsets, and supporting peripherals to
facilitate the management, accountability, functionality, and security
of networked based systems.
* Provide project management for distributed computing projects.
* Create and maintain effective policies, standards, strategies
and procedures.
* Mentor and train other personnel.
* Ensure appropriate support for all production and development
systems.
* Monitor performance and provide ongoing configuration and tuning
adjustments.
* Identify and maintain metrics on system and application
performance. Analyze data and take action on any issues indicated by the
metrics.
* Identify metrics and key monitors for capacity planning
purposes.
* Work with architects and developers to set standards and best
practices.
* Identify bottlenecks in system and capacity planning to
eliminate constraints.
* Review logs for errors or potential problem alerts and take
corrective action.
* Assist network team in maintaining availability, performance,
and security.
* Work closely with operating system and database administrators
to define platform requirements, measure performance, carry out capacity
planning, define and carry out security standards.
* Provide consulting to other technology groups and make hardware
and software recommendations.
* Provide user account administration for the distributed server
environment and infrastructure applications.
* Work with vendors, application developers, database
administrators, and other technology groups to resolve problems.
* Participate in a 24x7 rotating on-call schedule.
* Perform daily backup and recovery operations for the distributed
server environments in accordance with established procedures.
* Ensure adequate backup for all recovery scenarios.
* Plan and ensure redundancy for all critical components.
* Ensure disaster recovery plans exist and are maintained and
tested regularly.
Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or related technical
discipline.
* 5+ years of AIX administration experience.
* IBM Power 4/5, HMC, NIM, Logical Partitions and WebSM
experience.
* Solid knowledge of H/A in the context of application and
database clustering, and overall site architecture.
* Experience with scripting (Perl, sh).
* Solid experience with partitioning and using a NIM master for
software installs and updates.
* Project management experience.
* Ability to solve problems quickly.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and strong decision making skills
used to address escalated issues.
* Previous experience supporting 24x7 mission-critical
environments.
* Knowledge of storage technologies, including Storage Area
Networks (SANs).
* Ability to function effectively in a team-based work
environment.
* Experience mentoring junior administrators.
* Ability to act independently, take initiative and drive tasks
and issues to resolution.
Pluses
* Unix administration certification.
* MQ experience.
* Experience with Oracle/DB2.
* Linux experience.
* Experience with Netcool, HP Open View or similar Fault
Management Systems.
* Understand networking, firewalls, load-balancers, SSL, SSH.
