But glossing over all those hiccups, the truck looked as silly as it did awesome. It was a bit small, but had a lot of charm. So I started talking with the trading company (a little outfit known as ChangLi that also supplies a few importers in the US).

The shipping process seemed to take forever. At first all went well, and a couple weeks after paying, my truck was headed to the port. It sat around for another couple weeks until it made it into a container and onto a boat, then six weeks later, the boat arrived in Miami. The only problem was that my truck was no longer on it. No one knew where it went and I spent several days calling the forwarding company, the logistics company, my customs broker, and the Chinese trading company. No one could explain it.

The cage it was shipped in was beaten to hell and back, but the truck was miraculously fine. There I unboxed the truck, a process for which I was glad to have charged up my angle grinder in advance. Ultimately the un-crating went decently well with only a few hiccups that I caught on video along with my first test rides (of course my dad and wife who were both on hand to watch the show unfold were quick to volunteer to test it out).

I was actually surprised by the fact that the truck was in such good condition after the long journey around the world. I guess preparing myself for a banged up truck helped keep my expectations low, and so I was shocked when the truck arrived nearly dent-free.

I did a test with a Jackery 1500 solar electric generator and found that I could get a solid charge from the sun with 400W of solar panels, though it would require lugging around the unit and panels, or creating a semi-permanent installation somewhere around here.

I also want to add some mounts on the hydraulic lifting bed so my parents can pickup their trash cans and drive them down their country road-like driveway all the way to the public road for trash pickup.

Aside from being incredibly loud on anything but pavement (due to the cavernous echo chamber that is the inside of any high-roof van), I found it difficult to navigate on rough dirt roads, and unnerving to drive on any remotely off-camber trails, due to its tall height.

I also touched base with Chris Cordes, Trail Guide Manager at onX Off Road and former Editor at Overland Journal/Expedition Portal, who has more off-road driving experience than just about anyone I know.

They were designed as delivery vehicles with enough capability to tackle forest roads, mud, and snow on the way to drop off their parcels. Their articulation, high center of gravity, gearing, and unibody construction limit them when compared to a full-size 44 truck. With enough determination and patience you can bring them farther than many people will believe possible, but it will take twice the skill and three times the stress to do so.

CC: Most of my experience living out of either platform was chasing sunny 75-degree weather, so my snow experience is limited. From the experiences we did have with them in snow, both platforms were capable and predictable.

In "Boys 'Round Here," Blake Shelton sings about how he and his friends aren't like your normal guys who listen to The Beatles or do the Dougie. Blake and his boys keep it country by drinking ice cold beers while "runnin' them red dirt roads out, kicking up dust."

Chambers, a music teacher with a popular TikTok account where she posts educational and social justice related content, decided to poke fun at this stereotype. In October 2020, she posted a video of herself depicting a male country artist, singing the lyrics "beer beer, truck truck, girls in tight jeans," with the caption "men in country music," above her head. As for her female country artist? Yeah, she killed her cheating husband.

When country artist George Birge, one of the 5.6 million viewers, first saw the video, he was at a crossroads in his career. Until February of this year, Birge was one half of the country duo Waterloo Revival, but was unsatisfied with its level of success; at that point, he was having more luck writing for other artists and was considering ending his singing career altogether.
