Mrunal is a new bride who gets herself 'arranged marriage-d' to Avinash, despite having misgivings about his family's creepy obsession with the their dead matriarch. Pretty soon, she realises that her husband and her in-laws, as well as the servants in the house (who again are creepier than actual ghosts), are all talking to some disembodied presence of the Granny, who died a sudden death. And so, like any insane person in a horror movie would do, she says 'F*** you' to the spirit, and thinks she's won the game. We know better.

One of my biggest complaints with two of the four stories in this anthology, and chiefly this one, is that the makers initiate a bunch of possible plot points but them leave us to our own devices when it comes to interpreting them. It remains unclear how the child's obsession with his aunt interferes with her pregnancy, or how she comes upon collecting so many creepy dolls. The crow analogy stops making sense after a while, and by the end of the story, it forces me to believe that I may not have the mental capacity to grasp all the layers of the story.

There are answers to all of those questions, but I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House poses its biggest question in its opening minutes. "I have heard myself say that a house with a death in it can never again be bought, or sold, by the living. It can only be borrowed from the ghosts that have stayed behind," narrates Lily over foggy, eerie visuals. Soon after, she reveals her ultimate fate just as we're meeting her for the first time: "Three days ago, I turned 28 years old. I will never be 29 years old."

But as the film proceeds, it loses its way. First it becomes something of a Rebecca knockoff, complete with a menacing housekeeper (played by Heeba Shah), then it becomes a straightforward ghost story horror film and a lame one at that. So what starts brightly and like a breath of fresh air in the context of the overall film becomes fairly boring and conventional by the end, which was a shame.

In GHOST STORIES, Professor Goodman (Andy Nyman) is the star of a TV show that debunks supernatural and paranormal phenomena. He's invited to meet with Charles Cameron (Leonard Byrne), a paranormal investigator who originally inspired him, and Cameron gives Goodman a file containing three unsolved cases. The first involves a security guard (Paul Whitehouse) who sees a ghost while working the night shift in an old asylum. The second is about a teen boy (Alex Lawther) who claims to have hit something unholy in the woods with his car. And the third is Mike Priddle (Martin Freeman), an expectant father who received a visit from a poltergeist. Goodman returns to Cameron, claiming that all three cases are easily explainable via psychological means, but Cameron has at least one more shocking surprise up his sleeve.

Like Lust Stories, which focused on stories about love and sex, Ghost Stories is produced by RSVP Films, the banner founded by former Walt Disney India managing director Ronnie Screwvala, in association with Ashi Dua of Flying Unicorn Entertainment.

Although the oral ghost-story anthology continues to be one of Netflix's most popular titles, the streaming service has yet to announce whether or not the show will be renewed for season four. Until a decision is made one way or the other, here are the most unsettling stories on Haunted so far.

One of the things that make "Spirits From Below" such a terrifying chapter is the way in which the traditional Filipino family accepts the presence of otherworldly ghosts and attempts to peacefully coexist with them. By bucking horror movie convention, there's a credibility to the characters that makes the story believable. The interview is just as frightening as the dramatic reenactment.

In Filipino tradition, spirits known as "mumo" are treated with the utmost fear and respect. If you don't see them, they won't scare you. However, the way in which young Elle (Zuzuu Ellis) encounters the ghost, which causes her house to burn down before nearly drowning her brother in a well, is deeply upsetting.

With well-mounted suspense and intense atmospheric dread, "Children of the Well" remains a standout episode of Haunted. Although many stories in the series seem to be set in a basement, this one separates itself from the pack.

Raised under a strict religious upbringing, pre-teen Harvey is solely targeted by a malefic presence inside their old farmhouse. A trio of ghostly child voices beckons Harvey to come to play with them in the basement, where a creepy old water well with a mysterious past sits in the dark corner.

Fans of ghost stories and traditional horror fare actually have a great deal to choose from on Netflix. Stand-out entertainment with a supernatural theme run the gamut from kid-friendly animated shows to respected television series to the start of horror franchises. A list of the most notable follow, presented in alphabetical order.

Ghost Stories is a Netflix horror anthology consisting of four short films that each have a runtime around 30-40 minutes. The stories are not directly linked in any way, but it does still feel very organic in its progression.

The omnibus will boast of four shorts, directed Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, and Dibakar Banerjee, along with Zoya. Ghost Stories will be the third part in the anthology series, kickstarted in 2013 with Bombay Talkies, and continued with Lust Stories (2018). The stories will be thematically connected to each other and culminate in a hair-raising end.

Unlike straight-up horror, paranormal stories do something to a person's psyche that lingers long after the screen fades to black. The feeling is like no other, and before one knows it, there's something lurking behind the shower curtain or under the bed. So why do audiences keep coming back for more of the best ghost TV shows? It's hard to pinpoint, but what is certain is a new means of telling ghost stories seems to pop up every day, and they never lose audiences. On the contrary, with such a rich variety to chill the blood, if anything, paranormal shows are more popular than ever.

Netflix's docuseries and one of the more recent ghost shows, 28 Days Haunted centers on four teams of brave paranormal investigators, who travel through some of America's most haunted locations in order to execute a paranormal experiment based on the theories of Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The dialogue is a little awkward at times, and the pacing can feel stunted, but the ghosts! So many ghosts. For fans of action (as the title clearly states), there will be guns and blood and car crashes, but the show can also be alarmingly frightening at times, so if you're looking for a good jump scare, you're in the right place.

Another Netflix original series, Surviving Death, is different from the others on the list, as it focuses on a variety of topics: mediums, signs from the dead, reincarnation, ghosts, and even interviews with individuals who died yet lived to tell the tale. In short, no two episodes are alike.

A classic in the genre of ghost hunting shows with many still tuning in to watch it, Ghost Hunters features Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, the founding members of The Atlantic Paranormal Society or TAPS, as they search for paranormal activity around the United States. Popular for over a decade, the series has had a dedicated following for being one of the first shows of its kind.

The anthology supernatural surely succeeds in showcasing a chilling and haunting depiction of bizarre stories and is guaranteed to terrify audiences. Furthermore, A Haunting is widely considered one of the greatest series of the kind and assuredly makes for a very atmospheric, entertaining, and worthwhile watch.

In this appalling true horror mystery documentary named Paranormal Witness, which is an incredible addition to the genre, viewers are introduced to several stories of people who have lived through supernatural experiences that left big, unanswerable question marks behind.

This Netflix show has everything: true ghost stories, creepy imagery, and jump-worthy reenactments. In it, people deeply affected by paranormal trauma participate in a round-table discussion of sorts with their friends and/or family members in between dramatic renditions of their terrifying tales.

Propagate, the production and development office behind Haunted, did not respond to Mashable's call for comment. Furthermore, Netflix declined to explain how the stories of Haunted were vetted and did not confirm whether or not a research team was ever consulted during production.

When Mashable messaged with Eryn McGarry, the subject of "Demon in the Dark," Haunted's third episode, one of her first concerns was harassment. In coming forward with her story of ghostly haunting for the Netflix show, McGarry knew she would face nonbelievers.

"These things" are ghosts. Not homicides. McGarry's story does not allege any victim other than herself; she recounts her lifelong experiences with a ghost she believes has stalked her since childhood.

Granted, Bly Manor never quite reaches the same level as Hill House, but it's nonetheless a "perfectly splendid" ghost story that doubles as a quiet, thoughtful reflection on love and loss, in keeping with the oblique, cerebral writing style of James. Between Doctor Sleep, Hill House, and Bly Manor, Flanagan has pretty much established himself as the reigning master of reinventing classic horror stories for a modern audience.

As I wrote previously, The Turn of the Screw, published serially in Collier's Weekly in 1898, tells the story of a governess, hired by the absent uncle of two orphaned children, to look after them at his Essex country house, Bly. Soon after arriving, the governess sees figures of a man and woman she suspects may be spirits. She learns from the grim housekeeper that her predecessor, Miss Jessel, had an affair with another servant, Peter Quint, and both died. They also seemed to have had an unhealthy attachment to the children, Flora and Miles, and the governess suspects the children can see the ghosts, too. The governess succeeds in saving Flora, but saving poor Miles costs the boy his life, since he dies from the shock of Quint's spirit departing his body.
