Dear All:
This morning when going out to pick up the newspaper and looking up to say “Hi” to God, the moon was looking back at me. Last night before heading to bed, it was the most beautiful bright 500 plus, white watt bulb creating a perfect hole in the black sky. This morning it was in the northwest corner and had changed into a magnificent golden platter. All I could say was “Beautiful - Nice work – What an Artist You are”.
Saying Happy Thanksgiving is nice but somewhat mundane with just those words. I am wishing everybody a Happy Bird Day – except to those who are vegetarians. (The Indians have a meaning for those who are vegetarians which to them means “bad hunter”). In my life every day is one of Thanksgiving. As a matter of fact when greeting others I let them know that every day is really Christmas and that I’m waiting for Easter – which is my final day on this planet. In being Thankful there are many “F’s” in this life which are very important to us all. Faith – Family – Friends – fuel – food – firearms – fun – fotographs – (come on, give me a break) - Freds – (There are two of them who are special.) One was my best friend throughout those high school days – the other was the “ best man” at our wedding ceremony; and surely you probably can add a few more of the words that start with “F”, (but keep those to yourself).
Thanksgiving is a great day to reflect on the Generous Gifts which we have received in this life, but sad to say many are taken for granted. Driving to school today, the view of the city as we came down Paseo Del Norte, let me give Thanks for the beautiful city which we live in; plus the capability to enjoy the panoramic view which is taken in with our eyes and appreciate that scene.
We grew up poor in the West side of Detroit and had little, but it didn’t matter because everyone was in the same boat in our neighborhood. For Thanksgiving we couldn’t afford a turkey, so we shaped one out of oatmeal and carved it up like it was a real one...When we took family photos, we couldn’t afford to have them developed into real pictures, so we’d just look at the negatives through the kitchen light above... We didn’t have shoes, so we’d paint our feet brown or black and put white shoelaces around them to give the appearance that we did have them. Anyway every day the Lord is Thanked all day long. Especially whenever I see a crucifix, or any cross and they are everywhere one can look. In windows, on telephone poles, inside of building when looking at the ceilings – they usually have panels, which form crosses at the intersections; they’re everywhere, you are surrounded. So He is always available. On seeing them my words are, “Thank You – I Love You” – but it can never be said enough, or with the total meaning one wants to convey. It’s impossible while on this earth. He is a Good – Great God.
In my last-mail, some former members of the SPX basketball team who I was blessed to work with, and now share eternity with Lord was given. As soon as the letter was sent, there was an “oops” which came to mind. Another forward from the class of 1969, was recalled. His name was Dave Hoefel. Actually he was named after his dad, Norel, but lived by the name Dave. He was my mechanic at Red’s Automotive and we spent quite a bit of time together and became close. About 4 years or so ago he returned from Mexico where there was a member of the family getting married. Once back, a couple of days later he started to cough continually. It became so bad that he was hospitalized and put into a coma like situation, to correct his breathing pattern. On finding out about this situation on Sunday, I began visiting him daily through that week, including Friday. On Saturday morning, going into his room, it was found to be empty. I went to the nurse’s station and told them that I looked in his bed, under it as well, then checked his closet but he was not to be found. They informed me that he passed on in the late afternoon on Friday. He’s fine now.
I ran across Phil Petty – class of 1975 last Sunday. If you ever need a pleasant sounding group, who plays nice, music to listen or dance to, for any occasion, he’s the man. His group is playing at the Chop House ,(near the old SPX locker room and cafeteria), at the Uptown Center at Louisiana and Indian School, on a special night.
Special prayers are requested for Mr. Pete Matuecci, (hospice)—Mrs. Gutierrez – Mrs. Maestas – Mrs. Reiley (they had a bundle of children go through SPX) – Peg Purtell – the Mares family, and anyone else who is hurting, please let me know.
We are so happy to have our parents, but when they age, and hurt, coming down with dementia, cancer, etc. we hope for the best but have to take what comes. It will be better off with the Lord though we don’t want that day to come.. Tomorrow, it will be the 9th anniversary of my youngest brother getting his call into heaven. I phoned him on the 24th of November and asked how he was doing. He had been in a hospital, sitting there with a mask and hooked up to all kinds of machines, since February. He replied, “Hanging in there”… I asked him “Why – there’s a better life”. On Sunday, the 26th, when his wife came to visit, he told her, “God Loves me, He’s forgiven me and I want to go see him.” There was a conference phone call with his children and they were told and accepted his decision. Stopping any further assistance he was unplugged. Within the next 15-20 hours he was with the Lord.
Sandy and I were in physical contact with her mother who had terminal cancer and lived with us the last few months of her life in 1983. I was putting water on a cotton-like swab onto her lips, while Sandy massaged her back when she took her final breath. There was a pocketful of sorrow, but a house full of joy knowing that there would be no more suffering and she would be with her husband, family and God.
Saying Thank You to all who have been a part of this life is easy. Especially to those Happy Helpers, and anyone else who has been taught. You are all gifts and adrenalin to keep this life going. Every night time and prayers come your way. At least two times a night I get up, and take care of business.. When students ask me , “What’s up?” , my reply is “Usually me, especially when I have too much water before going to bed. I then look out into the window into the backyard and ask God to Bless all – with their family- who helped out to provide us with such a wonderful endeavor for us. For many who don’t know what I’m talking about, two years ago, about 32 former students transformed our backyard into something that could be in a Home and Garden magazine or some tv program. It was done in about 48 hours. They will never be forgotten.
So many people are to be Thanked for so many kind things they have done for us – it is humbling and so appreciated.
May God Love – Care – and Bless you all.. Thanks again for being a part of this life.
