Dear Yall:
Well it’s here – Hopefully 2016 has been good to you so far. Christmas was unforgettable with the entire family together for 10 days. Christmas eve took us to the house off of Menaul and Wyoming where we not only saw Santa on a roof calling to everyone below to have a “Merry Christmas” but he was tossing sweet stuff to the passer-bys. It was a pleasure to see the Vincioni clan en masse below which included many former students and even Betty Corrazi (former Dean at SPX, and cheerleader extraordinaire in my first year as basketball coach here) was there with her hubby Joe.
If you had the chance to read in the Sports section during this time there was a powerful article on Gene Pino (One of Coach Bill Duffey’s closest friend). He talked about his battle that is slowly shutting his physical functioning down. Gene coached here at SPX in the early 1980’s. It is inspiring to see how he faces his situation and looking around and hearing people talk about their problems makes me shake my head and want to say, “Be Thankful for what you have.) Many people have been seen during this past month who do have severe situations, mainly with their children who are deeply involved with drugs, or have abandoned their Faith. All of these people are a part of this prayer life, but I let them know that God loves those children more than we ever can, but our responsibility is to Depend on Him to bring the desired changes that we hope for. I have found that drugs are sometimes more powerful than God, but He will win out when the final bell rings. We think that those loved ones are being tested, but it is us, who have to keep the Faith and Trust to defeat this scourge.
Special prayers should also be extended to Bill Duffey and his wife Teena. They have an uphill battle with her health issues which are pretty dire.
Here is a section which some have indicated that they sort of get wrinkled at when I inform them. Tomorrow (Thursday) evening at the French mortuary at 6 PM there will be a Rosary for Percy Mares. He is the parent of Frank and Gary. The funeral will be Friday morning at 8:30 AM at Annunciation Parish. I guess God needed some humor when considering how our world is going now and it could depress anyone, but Percy could bring some of that, so he was called. Mr. Mares was one of the most gentle, very dry humored, easy going parent that I have come across in these years at SPX.
After Christmas I finished off the year with funerals Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. There will be one this Friday and Saturday to start the new year. Warning. Don’t get too close to me unless you have a huge insurance policy, because I seem to be a human mine field.
Mrs. Peg Purtell was on Saturday – her family now have 4 members sharing their life in Great Beyond, and it was gratifying to see their Faith as a testimony in handling their Mothers’ moving on.
Mr. Pete Matteucci was buried on Monday. He had a heck of a life and was heavily involved with WWII and St. Mary’s School. Daughter Rita was one of the most gifted athletes in her gender to play for us back in the mid 80’s. Pete was her number ONE fan.
Dr. Jack Adams brought thousands of children into this life and was appreciated and well-respected in our city. His daughter Samanatha was mainly involved with soccer here and she did exceptionally well in my History Class. She is a lady who still exemplifies “Class”.
Mrs. Rose Mary Vaio a strong, dedicate Catholic, who worked with many organizations, including Casa Angelica was buried on Thursday. This is a strong Catholic family, who had Bruce, Beth and Lynn.
Yesterday Angela Strempeck was buried in Santa Fe. Her daughter Gina was at SPX in the late 1970’s, but resides in Florida now.
It should be noted that Mrs. Virginia Mitchem also has moved from this earth in December, but I couldn’t make that final rite. Her children came to SPX in the mid and late 1970’s. Jim is pictured in the gym lobby for being an All-State basketball player.
In some of these instances it is a sweet – sorrow to lose them to the Lord. It seems that dementia was involved with more than a few. My step-dad was visited once a month for 20 years in Houston. The last six years he was in another world, with his dementia, but he seemed very content and happy, though he rarely remembered me. When getting to Houston if the timing was right, I’d take him to a Mass at the VA. He would sit and stare straight ahead, but when it came time to say the Our Father, I’d hold his hand and glance over to see him mouthing the words. He had been in a special, caring home since 2006. Thankfully they accepted his Social Security as payment each month. He passed away on the final day in November of 2012. It was going on 6 PM. The rule says that if they die during that month, all Social Security payments have to be returned. On finding out that he needed to be alive for the next 6 hours, I was tempted to fly down there and re-live Weekend With Bernie, and keep him company, moving through the City until the next morning. It turned out that I had to re-pay the $1,100 which the Nursing Home had received and used at the beginning of the month, by taking care of him.
As you see our lives here are temporary, and it seems like a parade of people above, it all has a purpose, to get back to Our Creator. Live each day like it is the last one. If anyone has a need physically, or spiritually, please give me a call or e-mail and we’ll see what we can do. 620-4786.
You are in these prayers. May God Bless- Care and Love you into and through Eternity.
Coach Tybor
Happy New Year!
