Hello everyone!
At long last we will be resuming our study of God's word. I'm sending out this email a little earlier than usual as I will be out of town this weekend. This will be my first session of leading, so please bear with me and pray for me as I figure out how best to do this!
This coming week we will be learning about the Divided Kingdom, Israel's darkest hour. The required reading for this week is listed alongside the questions. If you have time and wish to get the entire story of this period (covered in this week's session and the next), read 1 Kings 12-22 and 2 Kings.
Divided Kingdom - Part 1
1. Read 1 Kings 12:1 - 14:20, which begins with Rehoboam ascending to the throne after the death of his father Solomon. What was the immediate cause of the division of the kingdom?
2. Jeroboam, the king of the Northern Kingdom (Israel), is faced with a major dilemma in the Jerusalem, the center of their worship, is in Judah to the South. What is he afraid will happen, and what does he do to solve this problem? What is the result of his disobedience?
3. Read 1 Kings 15:25 - 16:34 and chapter 21. The same refrain appears nearly verbatim in the account of each king. What is it? What kind of men were these rulers, and what was Israel like under their rule?
4. One of the greatest prophets during this time was Elijah. Read 1 Kings 18:16-39. What was God's message to Israel through Elijah, especially as it was dramatized at Mount Carmel?
5. Under the reign of Jeroboam II, the king was able to restore Israel's northern borders and Israel enjoyed a time of relief from foreign pressure. The people became complacent, worshipped other gods, and failed to follow God's commands. God sent Amos and Hosea during this time to announce that God will not spare them forever but will send them into exile to Assyria. Read Hosea chapter 2. How will God treat Israel for her unfaithfulness, as symbolized by the way He tells Hosea to treat Gomer?
As always, pray before you read!
