Hello All!
I hope you all enjoyed your weekends, even if they were an hour shorter than usual!
As a reminder, we will not be having Bible Study this coming Wednesday, as we will be having our monthly Holy Hour instead. We will meet again on March 19.
As Christine suggested, here's the reading and questions for our next session so that you can get a head start. I'll send these out again later as a reminder.
We will be reading about Judah's return home after 70 years of exile in Babylon. The people return in three waves over about a hundred years. The required reading is Ezra 1, 3-7, 9:1-10:17 and Nehemiah 2, 4:1-5:13, 9:31-10:29.
If you have time, read all of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther.
Return
The Return Foretold
1. The events recorded in Ezra were prophesied by Isaiah two centuries previously, during the time of the divided kingdom. Read Isaiah 44:24-28, 45:1-6, and 45:13. Whom did Isaiah mention by name, and what did he say would be this man's role in the restoration?
The First Return
(Ezra 1-6)
2. Read Ezra 1. How was Isaiah's prophecy fulfilled? Why might God have given his people such exact information so far in advance? A prophecy by Jeremiah is also mentioned. What is it (read Jeremiah 29:10-14)?
3. Read Ezra 3-6. What was accomplished in the first return? What kind of opposition did the people face, and how were they helped?
The Second Return
(Ezra 7-10)
4. Read Ezra 7, and 9:1-10:17. Why was Ezra sent back to Jerusalem and what assistance was he given? What did Ezra find when he arrived, and what kind of reform did he find it necessary to make?
The Third Return
(Nehemiah)
5. Why did Nehemiah return and how did he fare? What additional crisis did he confront at this time (Nehemiah 5:1-13)?
6. After the walls were rebuilt and the people settled in their towns, Ezra brought out the Book of the Law and read it to the assembled people. There was great joy as they celebrated the weeklong Feast of the Tabernacles. Following this, they confessed their sins and worshipped God, remembering al He had done for them through the ages. What else did they do (Nehemiah 9:31-10:29)?
As always, pray before you read!
