Hello!
My apologies for sending this email out so late - time seems to have gotten away from me this weekend.
This week we will continue journeying through Luke's gospel and learn about Jesus' teachings and works during His journey to Jerusalem. The required reading is Luke 9:51-19:27. If you have time, read all of Luke's gospel (if you didn't already read it last week, though it never hurts to read it again!).
Messianic Fulfillment - Part 2
Jesus Trains His Disciples
1. Jesus was always attracting followers, but they did not always stay with him as disciples. What did Jesus say it would cost his disciples to follow Him? (Luke 9:57-62, 14:25-34)
2. In Luke 11:1-13, a disciple asks Jesus to teach them to pray. How does Jesus ask His disciples to start their prayer? What attitude does Jesus urge his disciples to take in prayer, and why?
3. Knowing He would be leaving, Jesus trained apostles to carry on after He was gone by investing them with authority to rule in His place. Read the following passages and note the kind of authority Jesus invested in them:
-Matthew 18:18-20
-John 20:21-23
-Luke 10:18-20
-Matthew 16:13-20
Jesus Proclaims the Kingdom
4. Read the following passages that deal with the Kingdom of God: Luke 13:22-30, 14:15-24, 17:20-21, and Matthew 25:31-46. Where is the Kingdom? Who is invited? Who will get in?
5. Read the three parables Jesus tells in Luke 15, and also the event described in Luke 19:1-10. What is their common message?
Jesus Prepares His Disciples
6. As Jesus and His disciples draw near to Jerusalem, He prepares his disciples to understand that His coming throne will be not in Jerusalem, but in heaven. Read the parable he tells them in Luke 19:11-27. What does He expect of His disciples in His absence?
7. Read Luke 18:31-34. This is the third time Jesus has explained to his disciples that he must die, and how. However obvious this may seem to us in hindsight, the disciples did not understand it. Why do you think that was so?
As always, pray before you read!
