Guys,

On Thursday, as my dad, brother, sister, and I prayed the rosary, my mother died at Northside Hospital.  It was a peaceful end of a nearly seven-year battle with cancer.

If you would, please include my mother, father, and family in your prayers.  I am very grateful, and I hope you and your families are doing well.

Peace,

Matt

Dear Matt,
I am very sorry for your loss.  There are some words I have borrowed from a great preacher of my acquaintance which may bring you some solace, if words can console a son in such circumstances.  May you be comforted by the fact that your mother has finally lain down her cross.  "May joy one day be yours knowing that where Lazarus is poor no more, she rests in Peace."  Dear brother, your mom's death has doubtlessly given you pause to grieve.  And, at such times, you are right to grieve.  It is among our reminders of the reality of this place in which we journey.  But, may you take the reminder from the Truth that you know, that your mother must now know with the same clarity about which St. Paul once spoke in 2 Cor. 13.  The Truth is that the way of this place in which we live no longer carries the finality of death.  "The Truth is that there is no death.  There is only Life.  There is only Love.  There is only eternal God."  I pray Christ will cover you with his gracious sympathy, like he showed Mary and Martha of Bethany and give you the True knowledge that beside Him in the joyous glory of eternal life your mother patiently waits the day when you and yours are bid lay down your crosses to join her in Paradise.  May your mother's soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Your brother,

John

- Quotes are directly from the late Rev. Msgr. Paul Reynolds.  Most
of the rest are paraphrases of conversations he and I had regarding
the nature of death and the Truth of death.  The last quote is taken
from the Eugene O'Niell 1925 play, "Lazarus Laughed."

Matt,
God uses some people to show others show to live and die with grace - especially those of us who struggle with faith. Your family was clearly chosen for this. My father was also one of those people.  It's a rare gift and no one would ask for it?  As my father (Dick Gries) said, "It's not like I signed up for this so I don't understand why the guys (Knights) are treating me like I'm doing anything special here (accepting God's will without complaint).

Matt, accepting God's will and then praying to light your Mom's path for her to travel on is an incredible gift.  I honestly can't think of a more loving action for a son, daughter or spouse to do.  The Knights did this for my Dad.  I will never ever forget that amazing gift to my father, to me and to my brother Dan who came despite his being agnostic at best.

I am terribly sorry for your loss and the pain of grief and there are no words to make that go away.   Our prayers will help.

But in a calm moment, please add your mother and family to your list of those who have shown the face of Jesus to me.

With gratitude for your family,
Joan
