"Master, I want to see." - Mark 10:51
CATHOLIC MEN'S CONFERENCE - SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

Gentlemen,

During the month of August, we celebrate three mysteries of the Rosary. August 6 is the Transfiguration. Peter, James, and John see Jesus in his heavenly glory along with Moses and Elijah. This is the fourth luminous mystery. August 15 is the Assumption; the sinless ever-Virgin Mary is brought to heaven, body and soul. This is the fourth glorious mystery. August 22 is the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. "We believe that the Holy Mother of God, the new Eve, Mother of the Church, continues in heaven to exercise her maternal role on behalf of the members of Christ." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, pp. 975) This is the fifth glorious mystery. Pray the Rosary every day, and Mary will help you stay close to her Son.

We have been examining the capital sins and opposing virtues to grow as men of God. This month, we will look at the sin of pride; the first sin. Because of pride, Lucifer, the most brilliant of all the angels, refused to serve God. Being guilty of the sin of pride means that we have an inflated notion of ourselves and our importance. This sin is, of course, an obstacle to our spiritual growth, as well as to our intimacy with God and others. Pride will keep us from becoming a saint.

The virtue opposed to pride is humility; the ability to see the truth about who we are in relationship with God.
St. Bernard of Clairvaux

The saint whom I have chosen for August is St. Bernard of Clairvaux. He had a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and wrote the Memorare prayer, which we all should memorize. He founded 163 monasteries in different parts of Europe and was known to have preached during the Crusades.

Remember, O Most Gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, we fly unto you,
O Virgin of Virgins, Our Mother.
To you do we come.
Before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not our petitions,
but in your mercy, hear and answer us.
Amen.

St. Bernard, help us to be men of heroic faith and humility.
