sermons on global warming

Two Sunday's ago encouraged by the meeting at
Rothamsted, I preached on global warming etc. giving it the slant that it was
part of our Christian duty to do something about it. New (church) year -
let's do something about it. It followed a lot of what Rowan Williams had
said earlier in the year about renewing the face of the earth, and working
with God's creation and not abusing it. It seemed to have gone down
well and one person asked for a copy to give to her spouse who wasn't
there.
Last week I had to preach at an entirely different
church in the deanery and I took much of what I had said the previous
week. I had two people come up to me afterwards to say that I was
totally misinformed and that global warming was just something dreamt up by
scheming scientists!!
HOW DO WE GET THEM TO BELIEVE
OTHERWISE?

It sounds as if Sally was a victim of the aftermath

I've been challenged as Sally was. I found Ch
2 "The Denial Industry" of George Monbiot's "Heat" quite useful in explaining
why some sceptics are so presistent and reassuring my own mind. I was
not so impressed by most of trhe rest of the book though, longer on polemic than
scientific understanding.

I have preached on Global Warming several times; opposition from some
is that this isn't what they want to hear about in a sermon!?!
As part of Transition Town Letchworth I recently spoke to a club of 'Old Codgers'. Lots of opposition there. Very challenging, very interesting. I sometimes think people need to express opposition before they can take it on board.
We just keep pressing on, knowoing and reporting as much evidence as we can, and stressing that leading a simpler, i.e sustainable, i.e. using much less energy and materials, lifestyle is not only not bad, it's good - enjoyable and fulfilling.

I agree with comments on George Monbiot's 'Heat,' and also with Sally's
findings. With regret I suspect there is no more willingness to take these
issues seriously amongst our congregations than amongst population at
large - but I suppose all the more reason to persevere. I found an article
in the Sunday Times magazine by Bryan Appleyard particularly helpful for
the non- scientist - readable and well informed - especially so given that
he was an ardent sceptic until recently. Worth a look if you can put your
hand on it - edition of 29 Nov. Also useful Q& A article in this week's
Church Times p 3 by Christian Aid specialists on the subject.

It does seem to me that even for those who entertain doubts about the impact of human activity on climate change, it can be no bad thing to be concerned about excessive consumption of finite resources - gas, oil - and to reduce carbon emissions in order to lower levels of pollution. I run a business supplying energy efficiency devices for gas and oil fired heating systems and other burners and despite 15 years of successful use and studies to prove the underlying scientific rationale, we still have our detractors and sceptics. It all goes to prove the old adage that 100 positive stories can be undone by just 1 negative story.

Tony Price makes a valid point. I was almost
certainly the only climate skeptic at the Rothamsted meeting and Bishop
Richard's initial questions about modes of transport showed, so far as I could
see, that I was also the only person to have got to the meeting on
foot.
I am quite happy to be challenged to explain
the scientific reasons for my views and equally happy for my carbon
footprint to be examined.
