The recent post by a spammer using Steve Hudson's address has prompted me into action as manager of this group. I have set Steve's status to Moderated for now.

On the wider use of this group, I set it up a number of years ago to act as a communication channel for anyone interested in the Environment within the St Albans Diocese. It has since fallen into disuse.

Following a period of uncertain direction, Helen Hutchison has been appointed as Diocesan Environment Officer and is formulating some action plans. I will discuss the existance of this group with her and seek her thoughts on whether to revive it or approach communication in a different way.

In the meantime, it would be interesting to know your thoughts.

Ken,

I think a group of this sort can be very useful, but I think all I ever received from it was adverts for expensive training courses.  If even just a few of us start using it for communicating what we are trying to do or problems we are experiencing, maybe it would revive?  Also, although you won't want to publish email addresses, perhaps users could post a little about themselves, eg church represented and role

I think it all depends upon the status accredited to the Environment Officer. In some dioceses the post is held by a senior cleric and the 'clout' that they can wield is therefore considerable. On the other hand, there are cases where the Diocese, to put it frankly, is just paying lip service to the concept. It would be interesting to learn how far up the scale the St Albans post rates.

Hi

You may discontinue me from the group if you wish. My role a few years ago was to advise on anything material or fabric related to the buildings within the diocese as I work as a materials consultant within the industry...

Communications between like-minded souls is very important. There should, at least be a contacts list through which we can communicate our own activities

Did you know that there is an St Albans Abbey Environment Group?.

We have recently finished a churchyard restoration plan at St Peters Church St.Peters Street St Albans. There are new interpretation panels installed. Go and have a look and tell me what you think It's under the 'Caring for God's Acre' banner (www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk)

If anyone is interested I am organising a conference "Hertfordshire Tree Wardens Forum" at Roithamsted on the 13th April. See attached flyer. You don't have to be a TreeWarden. Look forward toseeing you there. If you attend please introduce yourself.

Ken & All (if any remain in the group)
Surely we shouldn't be kicking the principles for which this group was established into the long grass (if there's any left??) in spite of its dormant state for quite a few years.
Having got the group together it's worth attempting to soldier on.

Who recalls the environmental conference held many years ago, in the Cathedral itself, hosted by the Bishop?
It seemed to herald essential actions for all.

Even without the group, I trust we are still taking individual action to do our bit, but the chance of some mutual encouragement would be no bad thing.

A chance to have informal social chats about such things can present itself at the monthly Greens Drinks which a number of the group used to attend in its early days - now they appear no more.

However members of Transition St Albans, Friends of the Earth & St Albans Cycle Campaign do turn up from time to time (sadly last month noone showed up).

Details.
Green Drinks (Second Tuesday of Month) GARIBALDI 20:00 onwards. Tomorrow 12th March.
GARIBALDI pub is in Albert Street, St Albans
In alcove at rear left - next to door out into garden.
Good secure bike parking in the garden.
Open invitation to an informal get-together of local people/groups with an interest in environmental matters.  (Much lighter than  it might seem!)
Expect to find a few STACC members, as well as
FoE, 'Transition St Albans'
'St Albans Diocesan Environment Group'

This Month the meeting does not clash with the fortnightly pub quiz, so is a little quieter.

Hope to see you there.

Tom,

There are certainly a number of people who have expressed an interest in continuing to use this group as a means of communicating with anyone in the Diocese who has an interest in the Environment. I am happy to continue to moderate the group. My only caveat is that I have no official position, other than offering to help our Diocesan Environment Officer, Helen Hutchison.

I have joined Helen to this group, so she can see who is a member and the potential communication value. In the end, I will take her advice on appropriate communication methods when I meet with her next week.

My own area of interest is the "Shrinking the Footprint" campaign, which I will describe in a separate post.

I would very much like to see this group become active.

I note that a couple of people have said that they are involved in a group in their local church.  I wonder if they could help get the ball rolling by each very briefly telling us about one useful achievement, and perhaps one challenge they would appreciate any help with.

Thank you Ken for your effort.  Martin King

Hi Tom and Ken
I am deeply involved in Transition Town Letchworth, and very interested in cutting carbon. Would love to attend Green Drinks, on the off chance if it could be done without burning carbon; maybe occasionally even at the expense of burning carbon, if I could be sure someone was going to be there. I also have it in mind to visit Helen sometime; maybe I'll see what develops from Ken's chat.
Let's keep up (renew?) our good work
Regards
Peter

Peter,
FYI four people turned up at Green Drinks on 12th March - but there's never any  guarantee that anyone will be there - "numbers can go down as well as up" as they say.
We are investigating a change of venue to the Blacksmith's Arms which is near the centre of St Albans, because some Transition St Albans ladies had expressed the unattractive nature of the Garibaldi's location in a dimly lit backstreet.
As to burning no carbon, it is inevitable that the lights will be on in the pub - though I hear that the Blacksmith's Arms now has a real yurt in the garden  which sounds like fun.
Transport wise I don't think there are buses capable of making a return journey at that time of evening - if you accept them as a carbon reducing means.
You are probably a keen cyclist but a winter evening ride to St Albans might be out of the quetion.

If I forget to put the details/confirmation on St Albans Environment, you can see them on St Albans Cycle Campaign Calendar at http://mcaf.ee/nqt05
I believe that Transition St Albans has a publicly accessible calendar on line.

Best Regards,
Tom Spaven

Thanks very much for this; the carbon burning was referring to the drive, which is the only realistic way to do it. I'm not a keen cyclist!
