The 21st century has been a time of tremendous change in the cultural and scientific understanding of sexuality and gender. It has also been a time of increased recognition of the legitimacy of diversity in gender, sexuality, and intimate relationships. Overall, there has been increasing visibility and acceptance of various forms of sex and sexuality across Western cultures. Prior understandings have been especially upended by the internet and rise in social media and other forms of social technology, which has undermined traditional sources of knowledge and authority, empowering individuals to embody more authentic forms of gender and sexuality. This special issue covers a wide range of topics related to the contemporary context of sexual and gender diversity, including the psychological experience and development of those who identify with minoritized sexual or gender identities (e.g., asexual, bisexual, gay, intersex, lesbian, nonbinary, pansexual, transgender, queer) or who engage in intimate practices or relational identities historically stigmatized (e.g., consensual nonmonogamy, kink/BDSM). Other topics center issues of health, culture, sexual fluidity, and intersectionality. Contributors review the most current knowledge about diverse forms of gender and sexuality and engage with theories of sex, gender, intimacy, and sexuality.
