Huracán Rhythm returned to winning ways with a 2–1 home victory over Ontario Maple Hawks at El Niño, in a match where the hosts had more of the ball, more chances, and eventually enough late quality to get over the line, with Schloss again giving the attack a proper focal point.
Huracán were handed an early lead in the 7th minute when M_Van put through his own net. Ontario responded on 31 minutes through Y_Stolzberg, who finished well to bring the visitors level before half time.
The second half was open, with Huracán creating the better volume of chances but struggling to beat M_Bosnich, who made 10 saves. Schloss had several efforts, Kuster also found space, and Himpfen had a first-half shot ruled not to have crossed the line after striking the bar.
The winner came in the 84th minute when substitute Q_Colboth scored with a lob from distance. His introduction provided a spark to a midfield that was running flat and struggling to break down Ontario. He recorded one tackle, one pass, one shot and one goal in a 24-minute appearance, pushing his case for first-team minutes here or elsewhere as the season draws to a close.
Huracán finished with 21 attempts to Ontario’s 11, 57% possession, and 19 key passes, having managed to keep control of the ball in a match where Ontario set up to pounce on mistakes. P_Wstega was named Huracán’s best player, while Y_Stolzberg was named man of the match for Ontario. Miranda or Stolzberg could both have made strong cases for the award, with five and six tackles respectively to keep their side in it.
The visitors, and Rzepa himself, will be disappointed with the performance of M_Rzepa, who cut a frustrated figure with limited service and was withdrawn in the 76th minute. His replacement Fouch then went down sore a short time later, leaving Ontario to finish short after using their substitutions.
The three points secure Huracán’s berth in the playoffs after a free-falling seven or eight weeks of losses, injuries and general unpleasantness. The teams from second to sixth can still move around heavily depending on results. Huracán, for their part, now have a hugely tough match away to Castleford Town, who want that second spot, before finishing the season against a resurgent Mincers.
But with playoffs secured, the club may use the next two weeks to give fringe players minutes, manage minor niggles, and try to restore some morale after a frankly shitty second half of the season. Colboth might be getting a chance to argue his case for more minutes after that cameo.
